  • American Diplomat Committed Murder say Pakistani Police

Pakistani police said earlier today that Raymond Davis, the detained American diplomat who says the two Pakistanis he shot and killed last month in Lahore were trying to rob him, committed "cold-blooded murder," rejecting his claims of self-defense, and a lower court in Lahore extended his detention for another two weeks (AP, AFP, ET, Post, NYT, WSJ). The U.S. maintains, and Pakistani officials reportedly agree in private, that Davis has diplomatic immunity, though Pakistani officials "appear unable or unwilling to enforce the protocol" (NYT). Sources tell the Daily Telegraph that Davis was in telephone contact with militants affiliated with Lashkar-e-Jhangvi in South Waziristan, and Pakistani officials have said the men who were shot were intelligence agents tailing him because they suspected him of spying (Tel, ABC).

ABC reports that national security advisor Tom Donilon told Pakistan's ambassador to the U.S., Husain Haqqani, that "the U.S. will kick Haqqani out of the U.S., close U.S. consulates in Pakistan, and cancel an upcoming visit" by Pakistani president Asif Ali Zardari to Washington if Davis were not released by Friday, which was denied by both Amb. Haqqani and the U.S. embassy in Islamabad (ABC, Dawn). U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and CIA chief Leon Panetta have reportedly called Zardari and Lt. Gen. Ahmad Shuja Pasha, the head of Pakistan's intelligence services the ISI, to warn that Davis's continued detention "threatened the foundations of the strategic relationship between the two countries" (NYT).

Obviously he will be released. Do you honestly think Pakistan is capable of challenging American policy? Pakistan lives off American aid, like it's counterparts. Without American aid, Pakistan will be on the verge of collapsing near instantaneously!

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

Many say he is not having a diplomat visa or anything like passport etc. One thing is clear very clear that he for sure is not a diplomat else the police could have never arrested him. Now coming to the point whether Pakistani govt can punish him. There is a big question mark, according to me the current rulers CANNOT. Currently we also hear that Shah Mehmood Qureshi the former, foreign minister was told to go home when he said that he won't protect this white guy.

So, according to me in the end this guy will be given a clean chit .. and he will return back to US.

          Admin Khana,
I agree, to what you said.
What do you think .. Pakistan's friendship is vital for America or Pakistan requires their aid more? Laka zama che koma raye da nu da haghi mutabiq if America stops aiding Pakistan it will not affect the common man that much. On the other hand if Pakistan stops supporting US for almost one year nu bya? .. !!

so to put this in a perspective.

pakistanis claim that america is doing drone attacks on themselves without pakis.
davis have been arrested now the drone attacks stopped.
pakis are frustrated that drone attacks stopped, noe they want to release the american so they can have the drone attacks again.

                    Finally, the obvious solution,
which I suggested from the VERY FIRST post on this topic !

I pray they do that : it's the only
                    FACE-SAVING WAY OUT FOR BOTH.

There's some tussle going on in the Pakistan establishment: some are indignant
that this guy should be handed over scot=free, where others are obedient lackeys
and are pushing for Davis to be released with no charges.

You guys haven't noticed in the original post what I see as a key revelation.
That the two were actually TAILING HIM for CID or whatever agency.

That makes it MORE evil, because if this is true, he did this
very deliberately to get them off his track.

I know what you mean, that it's unfair.
                      I agree !
Aafia Siddiqui should have been returned to Pakistan without ANY deal at all.
She had lost her sense of reason and was no threat to anyone anywhere.
She should have been handed over to the care of her sister and family
                      as a goodwill gesture.

But goodwill toward this supposed ally Pakistan is never a card in the US's deck - it's ruled out automatically.

So that's why I think that a practical compromise which has a faint chance of working would be a swap like this.

I see it as only third choice or so.
Better than nothing at all to be traded.

There was the third Pakistani run over by the US Consulate SUV too ---
Thus, part of the package should be a high compensation should be paid to the survivors of all 3 men.

Pakistan's outgoing foreign minister, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, has hinted that he was dropped from the new cabinet because he opposed American pressure to release detained American embassy employee Raymond Davis. At a farewell reception held at the foreign office on Saturday evening, Qureshi said that he did not bow to pressure from various quarters to declare the detained American technician as a diplomat.

"He is not a diplomat and I resisted pressure to have him declared as such," said Qureshi, adding "after my refusal the interior minister went on record as saying Raymond was a diplomat." He said he had conveyed his opinion to US State Secretary Hillary Clinton on January 28. Qureshi said that his opinion on the Davis issue cost him his job in the federal cabinet. He said that he was offered another portfolio but he turned down the offer.

I applaud his courage in staying with the truth.
May Allah [swt] give him a better reward than any cabinet portfolio, if
                              he deserves that reward.
