  • Governor of Pakistan's Punjab province assassinated

    http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/asiapc...ex.html?hpt=T2

Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) -- The governor of Pakistan's Punjab province, Salman Taseer, was assassinated by his own security guard Tuesday, according to Interior Minister Rehman Malik, apparently because he spoke out against the country's controversial blasphemy law.
The security guard was arrested, Malik said. The shooting occurred at Islamabad's Kohsar Market, which is frequented by foreigners.
Taseer went into the market to make some purchases, and he was shot by his guard as he left, said Naeem Iqbal, spokesman for Islamabad police. He was taken to a hospital, where he died, apparently from blood loss.
Malik told Pakistan's GEO TV that Taseer was assassinated because he spoke out against Pakistan's blasphemy law.
A spotlight was put on the law in November when a Christian woman, Asia Bibi of Punjab province, was sentenced to death for blasphemy. A court found the 45-year-old woman guilty of defiling the name of the Prophet Mohammed during a 2009 argument with fellow Muslim field workers.
An investigation by a Pakistani government ministry found the charges against Bibi stemmed from "religious and personal enmity" and recommended her release.
In November, Taseer told CNN that Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari would pardon her.
"I mean, he's a liberal, modern-minded president and he's not going to see a poor woman like this targeted and executed," he said.
In addition, the government said it would review the law.
Reaction to the assassination from Pakistani officials was swift. Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said in a statement he "strongly condemned" the incident. The Pakistan People's Party, the nation's ruling party, said it would observe two weeks of mourning over Taseer's death, according to GEO TV.
The English-educated Taseer created "a host of highly successful businesses," according to his official website, and is "the pioneer of cable television in Pakistan." He introduced the first English news channel in Pakistan, Business Plus.
His website describes Taseer as an activist who stood up to Pakistan's previous military leadership, calling it a "brutal and medievalistic dictatorship." He was arrested a total of 16 times, according to the website, placed on house arrest several times and spent time in "jails around the country."
He married twice and had six children, according to his website, which also contained a quote from him: "You live life once, you live it by your principles and you live it courageously -- that's what it's about." He lived in Lahore, Pakistan.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

I won't be losing any sleep over his death, but i bet you a few pakistani politicians will be literally cr@pping themselves tonight. All those secure road blocks, police escorts, checkpoints and it turns out the guy who is closest to you is pulling the trigger and doing a "Saddat" on you.

Good timing for Zardari though, he is going to put this guys picture on his ever-growing mantle-piece of "shaheeds" alongside his clown-faced wife.

Might win him some more votes from brain-washed pakistani's, you never know...

P.s. I'm surprised they haven't tried to pin this on the TTP yet.

^ Smart to remember the Sadat precedent, killed by his own army men Oct 6, 1981 in a carefully orchestrated plot.
These incidents look like the bodyguard just went crazy for a moment.

But if there are many parallels to Sadat, this was intricately planned well before.
Khalid Islambouli and the rest had worked on that for probably over a year if not more.

So there was no happenstance to the current one.

Good points about the overwhelming security measures, yet they failed to help him at all.

Glad you don't like Benazir either. One of my most hated politicians of the century.

About TTP, just give them a day or two to start playing the tired "Islamist Group Was Responsible" card in order to get sympathy from America and Company.

Just one of my friend has called me murtud for condemning death of governor punjab by his gaurd.

I am recieving so many sms. "harami taseer jahanam wasil ho gaya"
" Qadri ko salam, jannat mubarak ho" blah blah

People here are cursing taseer while describing the killer as jannati and comparing him with ghazi almudin

From the name it is evident that the killer is bareilvi

looks like overwhelming support for all gradients of society.

maybe he was an unpopular politician amongst his own constituents.

I tried the link but you have to have Facebook to access the page.

Are the people posting there thanking the guard?

He must have been hated for other reasons not yet disclosed, is what I guess.

Has the guard escaped, then? No mention in this early version above

a political leader who can't even pretend to have the best interest of people he is supposed to be representing does not deserve anything better than what this man got. seriously..
you are standing in an alley with a bunch of poor illiterate angry and hungry individuals who are beyond frustrated..do you really need to go ahead and **** up with their emotions just to get a reaction from them??
having said that, may God rest his soul in peace.

I am no bird, and no nest ensnares me.

The guy who killed him was not even from the TTP or some other Deobandi militant group but was a Barelvi.

With Benazir killed, Taseer killed, the rest of the PPP will be very concerned.

There is talk of the PPP losing office prematurely, and if not they will properly lose power in the next elections.

                    Former governor of Punjab.

The guy was reputed to be very corrupt, was married to an Indian before and had a son with her who lives in India and is a writer.

The interesting thing about all this is despite all the demonization of Pashtuns as being inherently prone to extremism (a fallacy) the killer was a Punjabi, and not even a Deobandi, but a Barelvi.

If things like this continue then Pakistan will just get caught up in to even more instability and chaos, ultimately ending in its collapse and break up, or alternatively Iraq-style occupation. The situation is very dangerous.

You are one nasty ingrate, aren't you ? Are you sure you don't have some Pakjabi genes in you because of rape and pillage of your land by these Pakjabis ? Coz you sure sound like a Paki to me !

For your information, "Sardar" is a title of respect in India and not ridicule, despite what pseudo-pakis like you might claim .
