  • Two-third Afghans want Taliban’s return: Poll

WASHINGTON - Almost two-third of Afghans are willing to accept deal allowing Taliban leaders to hold political office in the war-torn country, according to a new poll.

The poll released Monday also shows that Afghan confidence in US military operations to secure the country is dropping while Afghan support for the insurgency is rising. After a big drop last year, more than a quarter of Afghans again say attacks against US and other foreign military forces are justifiable.

Afghans indicated that they were pessimistic about the direction of their country and less confident about the US-led coalition troops, according to results of a poll conducted for The Washington Post, ABC News, the BBC and ARD television in Germany.

More than a half of Afghans said the US and NATO forces should begin withdrawing from the country in mid-2011 or sooner. A year ago, 61 percent of Afghans said they supported the deployment of 30,000 additional US troops.

While the new poll indicated 49 percent support the move, with 49 percent opposed.

Moreover, more than a quarter of Afghans said attacks against US and other foreign military forces were justifiable. Overall, about 75 percent of Afghans said they believe their government should negotiate with the Taliban, and nearly two-third indicated a willingness to accept a deal allowing Taliban leaders to hold political office.

The poll found support for Afghan President Hamid Karzai remains strong, despite allegations of corruption. About 65 percent of Afghans rated Karzai’s leadership as good or excellent, compared with 72 percent in 2009.
The number of people who blame US forces for violence rose from 5 percent last year to 14 percent this year, while the number blaming the Taliban fell from 42 percent to 33 percent, the survey indicated.

Results are based on in-person interviews with a random national sample of 1,691 Afghan adults Oct 29-Nov 13 by the Afghan Centre for Socio-Economic and Opinion Research in Kabul. The margin of errror is 3.5 percentage points.

The two-thirds supporting return of Taliban makes sense.
But the rest sounds SO suspicious.
    Notice WHO conducted the poll.

Also the way it is phrased is so Extra-Mild: Afghans are "less confident" about US military operations.

To a Western reader, that sounds like small cause for alarm. Big deal, that person will shrug, the Afghans are a little more skeptical, well, who cares?

There was NEVER a poll conducted by either Westerners OR the previous Taliban administration as to whether Afghans WANTED Americans to topple the regime and if so, by military force or other ways.

So, it's strange how polls pop up here and there these days, with results likely to meet hidden agendas.

This one looks skewed: ONLY 14 % blame the US for violence?
    I bet it's more like 95% !

    That's why I don't trust the poll.

However, if it maintains that 2/3 of the population will agree for Taliban leaders - of course it doesn't say, for the Islamic Emirate govt to be installed: just in collaboration with Western-backed personnel who fill the current ranks - then, more likely, 80 % at least would agree to that, in the name of calm and security for the country at last.

Catya Sher, if Taliban do come to government(No way) then pack your bags, and go move there instead of staying in the USA, maybe the Taliban will provide you with a excellent life full of liberties and freedoms.

Alchemist, If Taliban do ever come to power, I do not why Pakis here are getting so happy, Pakistan in the eyes of the International Community does not look good and It wont be long before the world will side with India, then what your bhangra punjabis going to do then eh? is mighty china going to help you when they find out supporters of their own Islamic sepratists are in Afghanistan and supported by Pakistan?

hahaha,do not keep your hopes so high. If you are trying to put Taliban into Afghanistan so in return we must put Taliban in Pakistan government as well eh? Would your Hamid Zaid agree on that when Maria B gets several lashes for her mini skirts hahah

It gets better and better everyday.

Taliban will never get into power, its impossible, no country besides Punjabistan is going to reconise such a government, so sanctions and lots of more sanctions, to hell with Pakistan, its already got itself into big problems and their only lame excuse is ohhh the zionists did it, ohhh really, it did not stop nawaz punjabi sharif from taking millions from bin laden hahaha Pakistan=big losers

      My dear, I am Afghan-Canadian.
Both my parents were born and raised in Kabul. My clan is hashimi and they are located in maidan wardak. If you want to see my pedigree I can email it to you. I already made it clear in the "Balkanization of Pakistan" thread that I am looking forward to Pakistan's balkanization. Farsyom balad astom maga noshtakadanish kata huruf e englisy khushim namyaya.

Although the polls are suspicious it shouldn't be surprising given the amount of causalities the US has caused in the region. Since october 2001 three afghan civilians have been killed by US everyday (and 4 injured). Never mind the home invasions and night raids and drone attacks and wedding bombings.

The Taliban will just morph and evolve into something else but they won't become instinct and you can rest assured of that.
