A friend asked me, what makes a mosque a mosque. What are your ideas? Must a mosque be a physical building?

the correct word is masjid, the word 'mosque' is a degrading terminology..the term mosque is derived from the spanish word for "mosquito." It was termed as such because during the Crusades, King Ferdinand said they were gonna go and swat the muslims "like mosquitos."

mosque... comes from the word for place of prostration... any place of prostartion taken in the context of prayer is a "mosque/masjid" hence the temple in jerusalem was refered to the farthest mosque as it was the place of prostration of the jews...Frater aliquis in fide nec fratrem humanitatis

The prophet muhammad sal allahu alayhi wasalam said that for his ummah the whole earth is made as a place for prostration. This means, you can pray where-ever you want to. There are two main exceptions to this. First of all, you cannot pray in a place where other deities are worshiped. And the second is, you cannot pray in a place where there is evident impurity.
What makes a place a masjid? Basically, we look at what the prophet muhammad sal allahu alayhi wasalam designated as a mosque. The mosque he built in Madina was a square with walls and it was partially covered with palm leaves as a roof. It did not have a carpet or anything. That was the prophetic mosque.
So if we want to define a mosque, then that is what a mosque needs. Nothing more than that.[SIZE="4"][B][CENTER][URL="www.quranawsunnat.com"]www.quranawsunnat.com

This is the first condition of a mosque mentioned in the Quran. A mosque cannot be the center of fitnah.Originally posted by MI6All depends on who is the head preacher of the Mosque.Islam will prevail, a promise made by the Creator of this universe:

Yes, it is a gathering place and a place of worship. It is a community.Originally posted by DaZahroJaam View Postit's a place where muslims gather to worship.Islam will prevail, a promise made by the Creator of this universe:

The chinese might not call it masjid nor pashtons call it masjid
We call it Jomat so is jomat different from Masjid or Mosque?
Every language has a name for something so lets forget about this so called Mullah propaganda of mosquito and bla bla..
Masjid or Mosque is a place of worship for muslims where they come together and pray, help each other with their problems and find solution for small/big problems by discussing it in the masjid.
Btw the url or the link u gave is posted by some kid or a person with limited knowledge about islam. Better get your sources from popular Islamic websitesLast edited by Guest; 11-19-2010, 01:15 PM.

This is what I had told my friend that it didn't depend so much on a building as one could prostrate before Allah almost anywhere. I asked someone why he didn't go to the Friday prayers and he said because they do not have a Masjid (thank you for the correction, I knew there was another word) in this city. I said that had a place where they meet, where they take their shoes off, and use prayer rugs and he said it had to be an official Masjid-building. I said that I thought it was also about community, of those who love Allah coming together, but he did not agree, and said he didn't want to meet anyone new in the place where he had moved to.

opinions are irrelevant when there are clear evidence from qur'an and sunnah. Opinion comes into play only when there is no clear and evident proof for kitab and sunnah. This is when scholars have to come with an opinion. Even then, you can't have just a random opinion. There is a methodology which is applicable.
People who make such foolish statements as there is no official building are usually ignorant and influenced by culture. They think that a building that is a crossbreed between a Eastern Orthodox Church and a HIndu temple is only valid place to pray.
I've had similar experience in the past. Usually these people misguide others by issuing their own fatwas based on their own whims and desires.[SIZE="4"][B][CENTER][URL="www.quranawsunnat.com"]www.quranawsunnat.com
