Re LZ: All right, I'll admit I smiled at the cat one.
But NOT the lightning strike on the Jesus statue outside Rio de Janeiro. It can only be a Photoshop type effect to delight atheists...
That DID in fact occur this year to a fake "church" somewhere in the American MidWest. That ugly statue got incinerated because God was telling them in a shocking way that they should drop their false evangelical nonsense !
I doubt many got the message, as there was much media coverage of the dramatic event, but little after-reportage to see what effect this had on that mission.

Re unknown celebi's a propos comment,
Great, yes, in fact I was exactly thinking about that.
It was in fact an icon of Mary as Theotokos which was venerated as the Protectress of the Byzantine Empire's capital.
So therefore, it was all the more revealing when the icon was taken around the city in a procession to invoke victory against Sultan Mehmet, the icon slid out of its case, called a riza.
There had actually been an old prophecy about this event, as well as another ancient prediction that the Moon would give a sign of the fall of the Byzantine Empire.
Further, there was a prophecy that Byzantium had started with a Constantine, son of a Helena [St Helen to Christians], and would collapse under another Constantine, son of another Helena.
Sure enough, the Moon went into a dark eclipse on May 22, 1453. [To me, this is all a thrilling story, one of my favorite historical times.
The events also prove that destiny is ruled by God, not humans....!
God further sent very eerie weather patterns. Huge storms, unusual sunrises and sunsets, weird lights at night in the heavens.
The Byzantines got really scared, realizing that all boded terribly for them.
That's when they paraded the Icon in procession around the city walls. Or attempted to, for also a torrential thunderstorm broke right at that moment.
Not just rain, but HAIL, unusual so late in the year, showered down on the Byzantine clergymen and participants, immediately halting their progress. Huge floods began, recounted the chroniclers present at these events.
So all this proves to people like unknown and me that God had mandated for the Muslim Turks to conquer the city and rule over a brilliant civilization from this glittering gem on the Bosphorus.
What is remarkable is that the Byzantine Greeks did not GET THE MESSAGE that God was unmistakeably saying. Clearly they should have taken up the young Sultan's offer of surrender, made a number of times. They had only themselves to blame for the pillage when the Ottomans captured the city after a short siege on the 29th morning.
But obstinately, they persisted in a stiff-necked way, ignoring the spiritual ill omen of the icon falling from the riza. [ If the glass covering an icon cracks out of the blue, this is often considered a bad sign, just to show how sensitive the Orthodox are in observing these signs from icons; such bad events are not ever considered mere chance.]
And yes, Unknown, you are so right! This sour grapes attitude, maybe based not just on resentment but anger at themselves for having been the cause of all their problems by refusing to surrender, has persisted up til the very present in attitudes of all christians toward Muslims.
In my view, Sultan Mehmet II won, fair and square, with Allah's help. So only people who are not really in accord with God's Will would resist God's judgment. But those same Westerners - for all Europe took up the pastime of moaning about the Byzantines' lost glories [or supposed glories] are the ones who are complaining to this very day.
As Maiwand said in a thread yesterday, first they try to attack the person's character.
There were all sorts of ridiculous claims about the great Sultan. It was all lies concocted by biased Greek historians. These were taken up by those in the rest of Europe. Hence the intense bias in textbooks, historical accounts, etc. of most material taught or read now, which is 557 years later !
How much there is a prejudice among Christians of all denominations toward Muslims, much stemming from this very time.
People need to see from whence these roots of European/American name-calling of Muslims as "terrorists" originally derived.
If the amazingly talented Sultan Mehmet II were alive today, guess what they would term him?!
I always hasten to add that his father gets little publicity. But he was indeed a great figure too and another model for Muslims much forgotten today as is even Fatih outside Turkey.
It's really an asset to PF that we have an unknown who knows - !!!Last edited by Catya Sher; 10-27-2010, 11:02 PM.
