As part of my Islamic Studies, I read an interesting story, that I would like to share with you.
"I remember days of difficult labor in a spiritual school where we were encouraged to keep a balanced attention through all kinds of situations. I was given the task of grooming a horse. From mane to tail, from the hoofs right up, I worked for hours. Then the teacher came and after a brief inspection said, "Very poor job, superficial and sloppy." He and I watched as my heart sank. but then something rebounded: I knew I had done by best; I knew I could not be a slave of reward or blame. In that moment I saw a twinkle in his eye as he turned and left."
After reading this I I reflected on my own life, and how often my attention and responses to life are connected to me being a slave to reward and blame. I know now (again) in life I should always try to do my best, to follow Allah, and how others react should not pull my attention away from staying in the moment, being focused, and not letting my attention wander away by the reactions of others. Easily said, of course it needs training to be carried though.
Any thoughts about this topic?
