  • Hanafi Madhab and the permissibility of Musical Instruments

As salaamu aleikoum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

there are some Sufi deviants who are promoting qawwali and singing and dancing.

I have learned from Hanafi brothers who have studied fiqh that all sorts of musical instruments are prohibited according to Hanafi fuqaha.

Including the duff which is permissible by some other non-Hanafi fuqaha.

So I want to know why people who claim to be Hanafis are still promoting damtoob of their bazingar mullahs!

It is prohibited...what people do are deviating from the truth.

I asked Abdullah Adhami once about music, and he replied so beautifully masha`Allah. He said: " If the heart is content with the words of Allah (Quran), why should it yearn for anything else?"

Sidi, I don't know what reasoning the CD was based on. Allah knows best. There is difference of opinion on this issue, but the position conveyed by Mufti Muhammad ibn Adam al-Kawthari is the very same as that mentioned in the relied upon works across the Sunni schools of fiqh, and held by most traditional Sunni scholars now and in the past [see, for example, the entries on Music in the Reliance of the Traveller].
Some scholars did, in fact, allow instruments if not used for vain purposes, including in this the use of some Sufis and others of instruments for 'spiritually uplifting' purposes, as long as this was free of other impermissible matters (such as impermissible song content, female singing for non-females, free-mixing at such gatherings, etc.).
This remains a minority opinion, however, and religious precaution would indicate avoiding it, for the many reasons, explained by Mufti Muhammad ibn Adam in his answer.
At the same time, Ibn Abidin explains in his Radd al-Muhtar [6.349, Ilmiyya ed.], one should not condemn to those (like upright Sufis) who have noble intentions in their listening to such songs and are far from vain purposes (lahw), as long as nothing else impermissible is conjoined with the listening.
As such, religious caution and following sounder legal opinion (and the outward purport of the prohibitions of the Quran and Sunna) would indicate scrupulously avoiding music and singing with instruments besides the duff. However, one should not condemn others about this because of the difference of opinion regarding this.

i have not seen a single hadith or ayah against guitar, classical or electric, the piano, etc (or gangsta rap for that matter) let alone any computer composition and such. In any case who cares what the bedouins allow or dont, my rabab will remain devine to me.

                Good question. Lets see:

which group of Muslims allow dancing and consider it as a type of worship?

Which group of Muslims occasionally organize gatherings where there is music and dancing celebrating their Sufi "saints"?

Which group of Muslims love their classic sheikh Qalandar very much and sing songs to praise him?

Which group of Muslims have the habit of making themselves look like Hare Krishna's?

The dancer wearing the orange scarf does particularly seem to lack good taste, the caption at the end is right about that.

It's a classic qawwali song for Lal Shahbaz Qalandar which they are singing, popularized by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan probably.

I agree, the Hare Krishna look 'has got to go', as my college friends used to say. It would indeed be healthy to weed out some of THESE types of accretions.

I like the original Sheikh, but not these types of behaviors which have grown over the years and if this video is any example of the norm, have gotten out of hand.

how do you know they are sufi sheikhs? they are not my sheikhs, did I say they were my sheikhs or you just woke up one day and said oh these are the sufi sheikhs, so they must be your sheikhs. These can be normal people just dancing at a wedding?

You wahabis take some stupid video posted by some ignorant deobandis who are like your step brothers from the same british mother and tag it with "sufi"...wow..you are a smart one.

IT is a nice song though....

I don't see this befitting for any "sheikh", but for normal people, hey, not a huge deal. We do not live in a prison or cave like you do, all pissed off literalists/anthromorphists. If someone wants to play a song at their son's wedding or what not, its not the end of the world. The way you people act, actually makes people hate Islam, seriously, its disgusting that you focus on such small things when we are being killed by the thousands.

This is so typical. Denial when there is no way out.

You have joined this forum specifically to defend Sufism. Your first post was an angry response to me because you wanted to defend your Sufi fellow Mujibs lies and fabrications.

And now you claim not have muhc in common with sufism or the dancing bazingar sufis.

This event is a arty celebrating a Sufi saint in Lahore. It is organized by the local Barelvi Sufi movement.

It is not related to any other group. Deobandis port dogs are even better than these bazingars. Dont ever confuse deobandis with these bazingars. Deobandis are closer to quran and sunnah than these bazingars of yours.

I've never seen a deobandi sufi dancing or singing or playing instruments. Its a trait that only exists among barelvi type of bazingars. Normal muslims do not behave in such manner.

LOL, when all other option have failed, sufis start attacking peoples ethnic background.

I might be half pashtun. But I am fully Muslim alhamdulilah. There is no corruption of pagan beliefs and ideologies in me.
