    The Khawaarij of Today

    Abu Muwahhid al-Khurasaani

The term Khawarij is nowadays loosely applied to Islamists and practising Muslims who reject the existing un-Islamic regimes in Muslim countries and are actively working to establish the Khilafah, whether by way of fighting or preaching (intellectual struggle).

Hundreds of sincere scholars and individuals have consequently been incarcerated or killed in the Middle East – particularly in Saudi Arabia – under the guise of stopping the ‘fitnah’ of the Khawaarij and ‘Takfeeris’.

Government scholars and their followers – pseudo ‘Salafis’ – are currently the forerunners in this campaign of demonising Muslim activists and branding them as Khawaarij.

However, if we take a closer look at the attributes of the Khawaarij, it is clear to see that the Islamists today are in fact miles away from any of their signs and characteristics that have been mentioned in the Sunnah.

    The Signs of the Khawaarij

The Messenger Muhammad (SAW) told his Companions (RA) that the Khawaarij will appear to be devout worshippers, and he also informed them of their signs and attributes.

Some of their key characteristics are:

    • Killing the people of Islam (Muslims)
    • Sparing the disbelievers (allying with them)
    • Revolting against the caliph, or Imam of the Muslims
    • Takfeer of the Sahaabah
    • Expelling a Muslim from Islam for committing a major sin
    • Physical appearance
    • Beautiful recitation, eloquent speech and good deeds

    Killing the people of Islam

    The Messenger Muhammad (SAW) said:

    ?????? ??? ???????
“They would kill the people of Islam (Ahl ut-Tawheed, i.e. Muslims)…” (Saheeh Muslim, Book of Zakaat, Chapter 47: The Khawaarij and their Characteristics, Hadeeth no. 1064)

It is well known that the people of Tawheed today from the du’aat (activists) and mujaahideen assert that it is completely forbidden to fight – let alone kill – a Muslim, unless he commits apostasy – despite the lies and false claims of the Saudi government preachers and their blind followers (fake Salafis), who would have you believe the opposite.

On the contrary, it is the rulers of Muslim countries and their foot soldiers – with the backing of their hired scholars – that are engaged in fierce battles with Muslims – secretly kidnapping their families, torturing their sisters and wives, arresting scholars that dare speak out, and killing them one by one.

So clearly, this characteristic is more applicable to the rulers of Muslim lands, Saudi government scholars and their blind followers.

Sparing the disbelievers (allying with them)

    The Messenger Muhammad (SAW) said:

    ?????? ??? ???????
“…And they will spare the Mushrikeen (disbelievers).” (Saheeh Muslim, Book of Zakaat, Chapter 47: The Khawaarij and their Characteristics, Hadeeth no. 1064)

Another characteristic of the Khawaarij is that they prefer the disbelievers over Ahl ut-Tawheed (the people of Tawheed, i.e. Muslims). They leave the Mushrikeen alone (even in the Arabian Peninsula today), but fight the believers.

Al-Wathan is any object that is worshipped besides Allah, and in one hadeeth the Messenger Muhammad (SAW) described the cross as a wathan.

The Messenger of Allah (SAW) informed us that the Khawaarij are people who will kill Muslims but spare those who worship the Awthaan (plural for wathan).

In 1986, during a visit to England, King Fahd was clearly seen with Queen Elizebeth II with a cross (wathan) around his neck. So it is plainly obvious who is really allying with the people of Awthaan (the disbelievers) and shirk – the rulers and their forces.

Allying with the non-Muslims (or cross-bearers – people of Awthaan), working with their police as spies or even joining them is an integral principle of the manhaj of the pseudo Salafis.

Revolting against the caliph, or Imam of the Muslims

This is a very famous sign of the Khawaarij. The Saudi government scholars and their blind followers claim the mujaahideen and Muslim activists are Khawaarij for wanting to rise against the rulers of Muslim countries, particularly Saudi Arabia.

However, what they are too blind to see and not willing to understand is that there is no Khaleefah for Muslims today, who has taken a pledge (bay’ah) from all Muslims to rule and judge by the Book of Allah. The Khawaarij were known to revolt against the Sahaabah and the Khaleefah, none of which exist in our time.

The leaders today arbitrate to the United Nations (Taaghout), and therefore they are apostates and illegitimate rulers that must be removed – as the Prophet (SAW) ordered. Today, there is no “one” leader (i.e. Ameer ul-Mu’mineen) for the Muslims, as should be the case. Rather, there are over 55 rulers, each with their own state, laws and constitutions.

    Takfeer of the Sahaabah

Another distinguished – and probably one of the greatest – sign of the Khawaarij is their takfeer of certain Sahaabah and expelling them from Islam.

There is nobody today following the example and Sunnah of the Messenger Muhammad (SAW) and his Sahaabah (RA) more than the Islamists and mujaahideen who are fighting and struggling to purify Allah’s earth from shirk and make His Deen the highest.

Anybody who makes takfeer on the Sahaabah is a Kaafir, and this is what the Salaf and the ulamaa’ of the mujaahideen and du’aat believe.

Expelling Muslims from Islam for committing major sins

This is indeed a very well known attribute of the Khawaarij, who believe that a person’s Imaan can never decrease, and hence if one commits a major sin they have left the fold of Islam.

Nowadays we are living in a time when the disease of irjaa’ (separating Imaan from actions) has become widespread. Today, it is nearly impossible to convince a Muslim that a person who commits major kufr or shirk has left the fold of Islam, so who today is expelling Muslims from Islam for committing major sins?

The only people that are doing this are the so-called “moderates” and pseudo Salafis, who claim suicide bombers and people who kill “innocent” people are not Muslims.

Ibn Baaz said those individuals who carried out the initial Riyadh bombings in November 1995 on an American compound (used to train Saudi National Guards) were people who “without doubt… did not believe in Allah and the Last Day (Hereafter),” thus exposing his Khaariji beliefs and ideology – and he is one of the main Imaams of the pseudo Salafis.

There are a number of mujaahideen and scholars who deem ‘suicide bombings’ or martyrdom operations to be permissible. However, whether suicide bombings are permissible or not is irrelevant to the fact that “unjust” murder (of so-called “innocent” people) does not expel one from Islam, therefore how is it that these moderates and bogus neo-Salafis turn to the manhaj of the Khawaarij on this matter?!

Even in fiqh, if a Muslim kills a non-Muslim unjustly, he is not expelled from Islam and nor is he killed in retribution, as the Messenger Muhammad (SAW) said:

    ?? ???? ???? ?????
“A Muslim is not killed (in retribution) for a Kaafir.” (Musnad al-Imaam Ahmad)

Whether “suicide bombers” are in Hell or Heaven is not a matter for us to decide, as this is a matter of ‘Ilm ul-Ghaib, and only Allah knows. It is not for us or scholars like Ibn ‘Uthaymeen or al-Fawzaan to declare they will never be in Heaven, or they will be in Hellfire.

Moreover, if “suicide bombings” or martyrdom operations are interpreted as suicide by some, suicide is a major sin in Islam, not kufr, so anyone who excludes such individuals from Islam is following the manhaj (methodology) of the Khawaarij.

However, killing Muslims by labelling them as Khawaarij, allying with disbelievers against Muslims and handing them over to the enemy – as the pseudo Salafis and their scholars deem necessary – is major kufr and apostasy.

Deliberately targeting and killing Muslims is forbidden in Islam, and every single Muslim knows this, including the mujaahideen.

    Physical appearance

The first Khaariji in Islam, Dhul Khuwaysirah at-Tameemi, was described as having a protruding forehead, large beard and shaved head. (See Saheeh al-Bukhaari and Muslim)

Those whom the pseudo Salafis consider to be Khawaarij are far from this description. In fact, it is they themselves and their brethren from Brixton, Birmingham, Luton, Toronto and so forth that fit the description of Dhul Khuwaysirah more than anyone else.

Beautiful recitation, eloquent speech and good deeds

The Khawaarij were also described as dedicated, practising Muslims. In fact, the Messenger Muhammad (SAW) said if an ordinary Muslim looks to their outer (apparent) deeds he would feel inferior and disappointed with himself!

It is reported in Saheeh al-Bukhaari that the Messenger Muhammad (SAW) said:

    ???? ???? ??? ?????? ?????? ?? ??????? ??????? ?? ??????? ?????? ?? ?????? ??????? ?????? ?? ????? ???????? ?????? ?? ????? ??? ???? ????? ?? ??????
“There will appear some people among you whose Salaat (prayer) will make you look down upon yours, and whose Siyaam (fasting) will make you look down upon yours, and whose good deeds will make you look down upon yours, but they will recite the Qur’aan which will not exceed their throats. They will go out of Islam the way an arrow leaves the bow…” (Saheeh al-Bukhaari, Book 66: The Virtues of the Qur’aan, Chapter 36, Hadeeth no. 5058)

Ironically, the individuals whom the pseudo Salafis consider to be Khawaarij, according to their own standards, are ignorant of Islam, the Qur’aan and even the Arabic language – so they clearly do not match the description of the Khawaarij told by the Prophet (SAW)!

In reality, it is the pseudo Salafis themselves who appear to have more traits and characteristics of the Khawaarij. They control many mosques, have many Qurraa’ (beautiful reciters of the Qur'aan), and appear to be devout, pious Muslims, yet the verses they have memorised do not exceed their throats.

The Messenger Muhammad (SAW) also described the Khawaarij as immature youth who would be young in age, but they would have eloquent tongues and make impressive speeches:

    ????? ?? ??? ?????? ??? ????? ???????? ????? ???????? ?????? ?? ??? ??? ??????. ?????? ?????? ?? ????? ???????
“There would arise at the end of the age people who would be young in age and immature in thought, but they would talk (in such a manner) as if their words are the best among the creatures. They would recite the Qur’aan but it would not go beyond their throats…” (Saheeh Muslim, Book of Zakaat, Chapter 47: The Khawaarij and their Characteristics, Hadeeth no. 1066)

There are many young, immature youths today who are beginning to follow the sick and twisted cult of the pseudo Salafis. They mesmerize their audiences with beautiful speeches and recitation of the Qur'aan, yet the clear-cut verses of Allah they quote go unheeded. Moreover, they have most of the traits and characteristics of the Khawaarij.

Talafi Fabrications and their Devilish Manhaj

There are a number of young, immature groups that claim to follow the Nahj (path) of the real Salaf (may Allah be pleased with them). However, the Salaf are free from them and their baatil (falsehood) and kalaam (speech).

They are staunch, blind followers of the likes of Ibn Baaz, Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, Rabee’ al-Madkhali, Ibn Jibreen, Saalih al-Fawzaan and others.According to them, one cannot be a Salafi unless he follows their so-called Kibaar (great) scholars and Imaams.

Although they speak of Tawheed, they are far from the Tawheed of al-Walaa’ wal-Baraa’ (loving and hating for the sake of Allah) – taking the enemies of Islam as intimate friends and helpers, and often complaining about why Islamic activists are not being thrown behind bars or killed.

There is not one single Taaghout they can identify and reject by name – not even Bush! Instead, they exhaust all their efforts on attacking the Muwahhideen, mujaahideen and du’aat, as opposed to the tawaagheet.

Their scholars, Ibn Jibreen in particular, have issued fatwas stating it is prohibited to buy, sell or distribute the newspaper Asharq Alawsat (Ash-Sharq ul-Awsat), yet we see these hypocrites (neo-Salafis) referring to this paper – and other non-Muslim or un-Islamic sources – as if it is some kind of divine text or hujjah (proof), making tafseer on it and quoting it as evidence to attack and “refute” scholars and du’aat who are not following their twisted manhaj and evil ideology of labelling those who rise against Taaghout as Khawaarij.

No Muslim is safe from their vile rants and slander – either you are with them and the Americans, or you are misguided or Khaariji.

Muslims must be aware of these sick individuals. It is forbidden to attend their gatherings, increase their numbers or incline towards these wrong-doers in any way.

They are Murji’ah with the rulers, but Khawarij with the Muwahhideen and mujaahideen.
