The feet part is not unanimous between the four schools of thought.

If someone can explain why the head should be covered, that'd be greatly appreciated (i.e., is it from the Quran, from the hadiths, a cultural/traditional custom that has been prevalent in much of the world, at least was until recently in the Christian and Jewish west as well, or if it's just something that all scholars agree on... and by "all," I mean the scholars whose opinion counts).

And sources will also be great Even if it's "the Quran says so" kind of statement.

      Manana.

THE QUESTION ARISES AMONGST A COMMUNITY OF PASHtOONS. WHAT A SAD DAY THIS ONE IS.

I am no bird, and no nest ensnares me.

non commercial would cost less if he was in charge himself which he plans on doing. right now it's n herat but soon it will be in qanadahar.

surreal animals come in packs too. it doesn't make them a community. besides, the question being asked is not that of your community.

I'n case your level of intellect is low, the thread is about HIJAB. Not what is Hijab, We are discussing to what extent should we ladies be covered. Should we wear a Niqab? A scarf? What is modestly accepted in our society.

No offence, but you have been so well embraced here on PashtunForums just take a look at your intro thread and in response all you have been doing is spreading negativity and being an uneducated critic.
The thread is about hijab not what hijab is? Is that your so educational response. Stop sending me on guilt trips they dont work on me. This is not a family gathering. We come here to discuss things not embrace each other in agreements. The second part of my reply would have to wait. I just realized that I forgot my phone charger at home. I would rather use what I have of it for the company of worthy ones. DONT FEEL LEFT OUT

              30. Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty: that will make for greater purity for them: And Allah is well acquainted with all that they do.

              31. And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments exc...ept what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband's fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or the slaves whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex; and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O ye Believers! turn ye all together towards Allah, that ye may attain Bliss. [Surah: 24, Ayah: 30-31]

No need for this nonsense on how she asked this.

Most of the Pashtuns here are born in the west so they asking a question instead criticize? Bananas I call it.
Oh no I'm not criticising her for voicing her question, she's free to do so, that's not what I meant, khair.

And I did voice voice my feedback, hence the post.

The next verse of Surah Noor, says:

" And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands fathers, their sons..."
                  [Al-Qurâan 24:31]

                  3. Six criteria for Hijaab.

According to Qurâan and Sunnah there are basically six criteria for observing hijaab:

                  1. Extent:

The first criterion is the extent of the body that should be covered. This is different for men and women. The extent of covering obligatory on the male is to cover the body at least from the navel to the knees. For women, the extent of covering obligatory is to cover the complete body except the face and the hands upto the wrist. If they wish to, they can cover even these parts of the body. Some scholars of Islam insist that the face and the hands are part of the obligatory extent of hijaab.

All the remaining five criteria are the same for men and women.

                  2. The clothes worn should be loose and should not reveal the figure.

                  3. The clothes worn should not be transparent such that one can see through them.

                  4. The clothes worn should not be so glamorous as to attract the opposite sex.

                  5. The clothes worn should not resemble that of the opposite sex.

                  6. The clothes worn should not resemble that of the unbelievers i.e. they should not wear clothes that are specifically identities or symbols of the unbelievers religions.

There's absolutely no doubt about the fact that all humans (at least all Muslims) should wear a hijab.

The question is, what IS hijab? What do we mean by hijab? What is modesty?

@ Badal, You said: "According to Qurâan and Sunnah there are basically six criteria for observing hijaab:..."

And then you listed the criteria without telling us where IN the Quran (we know it's in hadiths, but where in the Quran) does it list those?

Also, guys, note that the verses you posted talk about modesty and how important it is ... but the question remains: What is modesty? Is it possible that while the principle and its significance remain important and static but the way it's practiced changes with time and society? Or can that not be possible at all?

But we'll go step by step and just ask for a definition of modesty and hijab.

Good discussion - only, I wish some of us would stop insulting each other and saying things that are not called for at all.

There r many things which are not listed in Quran. But we can get guideness from hadiths.

I understand that, wrora. In that case, then don't say "the Quran and Sunnah tell us ..." Because the Quran doesn't define modesty; hadiths do.

Nonetheless, do you guys think we should universalize our concept of modesty and impose it on everyone else? ...

The only HIJAB/PARDA or covering that I see in the verse on Hijab is to cover the bossoms which is a normal practice in the whole world that women usually cover their bossoms.
this is what the verse says

that they should draw veils over their bosoms

all other parts of the verse are about modesty etc.

and a friend above has raised a very important issue that why pashtuns are discussing Hijab why not other Muslims. It seems that Pashtuns have taken the whole responsibility to observe all religious injunctions in letter and spirit why others are busy in other more importnat things!

                              Also, regarding hadiths ...

It's inevitable to bring up hadiths when talking on Islam since hadiths make up over 90% of our "Islamic" practices! One wonders if it's just Arab practices (i.e., Arab Sunnah) or actual ISLAMIC practices ... but that's open to debate).

So, whenEVER we discuss hadiths, it's important that we know what we're talking about. To understand my point, please take a look at this other thread where I've raised this issue on the importance we've given to hadiths with all the knowledge most of us lack about hadith science/literature/history/dialogues.

Here's the link to that thread ("Qrratugai vs Aseer" -- sorry about the name, lol.)

                              http://pashtunforums.com/showthread.php?t=441&page=2

That thread, too, is about hijab and modesty and whatnot.
