Is it healthy to indoctrinate children with a set of already existing ideals, or would it be healthier to allow a child to set their own ideals or to choose their own ideals from the existing pool?

  • #2
its always parents who should set the foundation for the ideals that children follow.......
but of course when they grow up and reach the age of distinguishing whats right and whats wrong, some modify these ideals or some go absolutely against it.........

eventually as children we follow the moral principles laid down by parents and then we have our own set of values to follow which definitely revolves around that has been inculcated in us as children...

as its said that the heart and mind of children are like blank papers.....they will become what u want them to become....

also this reminds me something that i had read....

      CHILDREN LEARN WHAT THEY LIVE

If a child lives with criticism, he learns to condemn.

If a child lives with praise, he learns to appreciate.

If a child lives with hostility, he learns tonight.

If a child lives with tolerance, he learns to be patient.

If a child lives with ridicule, he learns to be shy.

If a child lives with encouragement, he learns confidence.

If a child lives with shame, he learns to feel guilty.

If a child lives with approval, he learns to like himself.

If a child lives with fairness, he learns justice.

If a child lives with security, he learns to have faith.

If a child lives with acceptance and friendship,

he learns to find love in the world.

      Good thread Dust.......will post more....

        Spozhmai Khore,

what do you make of if the parents' ideals are wrong? Islam believes that Allah is God, whereas Christianity believes that Jesus is God. Also, in the Pashtun culture we have a lot of gender issues, whereas in the Western culture they are working towards overcoming this problem.

Moreover, in certain Islamic sects you would be murdered if you left Islam, whereas liberal democracies are very tolerant of a multi-faith, pluralistic, society. Which parent would be indoctrinating the correct ideal?

Today, homosexual couples can not only get married, but they can also adopt children. Would it be correct to teach a child that homosexuality is correct?

Parents instill the fear of not committing social taboos for fear of being rejected by the "inner circle." Is this correct; should this be allowed? Does the child belong to the parents?

Would you let your children have incestuous sex otherwise known as "experimentation" in some circles? Some people now days are really open-minded and see beyond the religious and social taboos created by men. There are biological consequences but then again one can use protection. Incest has many good articles. For example you are involved with someone you trust, it's convenient, a little experience before you find your one true love improve the chances of you impressing a life long partner in bed. Or if things really work out you might not need true love, and just keep it in the family. Marriage is obsolete in modern sense thanks to free love, imagine what would happen if incest is accepted. Many won't look beyond their homes.

What about respect for parents, should your children respect you just because you gave them life? Or should parents earn that respect by catering to their needs, sending them to great schools, buying them what they desire. What about honesty, integrity? Should your children grow up to be honest, even at their own expense? What if a lie can enhance their career, what about bribery, seduction.....anything that will increase their chances of success? How about murder, is that really wrong?

Some people, take this current civilized world for granted without having to realize why it is so "civilized" in the first place.

Everything is indoctrination, everything, even the concept of tree hugging love for humanity and "save the forest" type.

All of that is indoctrination too. Should a man treat a woman equally? Should homosexuality be okay? Why should your children not kill apostates or anyone that disagrees with them? Please don't tell me sanctity of life, humanity, FREEDOM, RIGHTS, all of that, each and every subject, are ideals that are indoctrinated into us.

When I was in high school, someone being openly gay was very rare. Today there are openly gay youth in middle schools. MIDDLE SCHOOLS! I didn't know what to make of my 14 year old cousins friend from school who was openly bi-sexual. OPENLY! He was there for his birth day party. What do you say to that? Do you teach your kids to watch out for their bi-sexual friends? Do you teach them to discriminate or do you teach them to go with the flow, enjoy the experimentation?

              Wrayun,

today, in certain sects of Islam, it is considered lawful to kill someone who leaves Islam. What would you make of this if every religion taught this? Where would your concept of dawat ilallah go?

I can argue that the fact that other religions don't preach this, while Islam does, is a sorts of divine intention, that makes it possible for people to come to the truth while eliminating any chances of increasing in falsehood.

If God had intended this, as per your notion, then what does free-will serve?

I'd argue, that argument will work if the penalty was carried out by God, and not those who are equal to you.

By free-will, did you intend why would God prevent people from apostatizing by prescribing the punishment of death?
