Church 'praying' about plan to burn Quran, pastor says after warning

MIAMI — A church planning to burn copies of the Quran on Sept. 11 is 'definitely praying' about the controversial demonstration, its pastor said after Gen. David Petraeus warned it would put in danger the lives of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan.
In an interview on CNN, Terry Jones, of the Dove World Outreach Church in Gainesville, Fla., appeared to suggest church members might decide not to go ahead with the controversial demonstration.
Jones, author of a book called "Islam is of The Devil," told CNN's "American Morning" show that the burning was designed to send a message to radical Islam.
But when he was asked about the views of Petraeus, the U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan, Jones said: "We are actually very, very concerned of course; we are taking the general's words serious. We are continuing to pray about the action on September 11. But we don't know, how long do we back down?"
Pressed on whether this meant the church might decide not to burn the Quran, Jones told the show: "We have firmly made up our mind, but at the same time, we are definitely praying about it."

"We are weighing the thing that we are about to do. What it possibly could cause, what is our actual message, what are we trying to get across?" he added.

I am very sad about what this church has planned to do It is a very small church (only 50 members if I recall correctly) and I think they just wanted a lot of attention and unfortunately they got it. What they are doing is very un-Christian and I hope and pray they do not go through with it but I think they want to provoke Muslims into responding so I have a feeling they will Just like I know most Muslims are good and kind people, please keep in mind that most Christians also are. We cannot judge one another especially based upon the actions of a few crazy or extremist members of our communities.

they do realise that the Quran contains prophets like moses, Adam, Jesus etc, thats why we muslim don't burn books like bible etc because its still contains our prophets.

I don't want to stir up unhappiness. But the fact is that MOST Christians of denominations across the spectrum have a terribly NEGATIVE VIEW of Islam and Muslims.
I have been shocked to read the things they write, it's truly appalling the ignorance and self-righteous attitude of so many so-called Christians.

I always say to these people if given a chance that the Muslims whom I have met are more Christian than the average people today calling themselves Christians here in America.
They hate that, though and lecture me using jabs founded in complete ignorance. I wouldn't repeat them because they are so terrible.

So: I fear that these crazies have probably secret supporters throughout the country.
They know better than to say out loud but I bet behind the scenes this "pastor" - a fake and a fraud totally - is being applauded.

The amount of prejudice Christians allow themselves to indulge in is staggering.
They don't read anything of history. But they blindly repeat the same old statements made by their ancestors of over 1,000 years ago!
All were based on simple fear of Islam as a powerful competitor for "souls". That's my analysis.
So the propaganda about Muslims [never called by their name but always branded some term reducing them to robots like "Saracens"] was to further political and religious goals.
Unfortunately over a millenium, not many Christians took time out to find out who their perceived enemy even was!
To me, it is ludicrous and lead to so much unnecessary strife and acrimony and name-calling.

This 'church' episode - for I don't see this type of place as a real Church - is illustrative of the enduring nature of this ill-informed animus against Muslims.

And yes, Suzy is right: it IS all for attention. Maybe the membership rolls at the place have been declining.
People have done other such stunts to generate publicity and followers for their dwindling numbers.
For, to many of these Protestants, numbers are the only thing that matters. They will do anything to get their 'sheep' to follow them!
