  • Clearing an atheist misconception: Paradise is not the reward for good deeds

We often hear this from atheists who want to make us believe they have morality. They say that they perform good deeds because they have morality and they do good for the sake of goodness.

The atheists say that Muslims only do good out of self interest. They expect to be rewarded for those deeds and they are not doing it because they believe those deeds are good by themselves.

This is a misconception of not just the atheists but also those ignorant people who ascribe themselves to Islam without truly understanding it.

The real reason why Allah grants his paradise to people is because they inclined towards Allah and had the right attitude.

A person can perform good deeds but have incorrect beliefs and commit shirk. A person may be unable to perform any deeds because he dies, or maybe she is born without any means to perform those deeds.

It would be unfair if Allah grants those who have more abilities with paradise just because of their deeds and deny paradise from the less capable ones.

Therefore, one must have the right aqeedah, be sincere and strive towards Allah.

People who have good intentions and want to perform good deeds for the sake of Allah are rewarded for their intention. Not for the deeds. Because some might die before actually performing the deeds. Those people who die before doing it are also granted paradise.

As Muslims we have faith in Allah, his promise of paradise and rewards not as equal pay for our deeds but as his mercy and genorocity for his servants. No amount of prayers and good deeds can buy a square inch of paradise without Allah's mercy and grace.

This doesn't mean we don't have to do any deeds. We obey and serve Allah out of love and devotion, we do good because Allah is goodness and it pleases Allah when we strive towards goodness.

The problem with atheism is that their beliefs are based on Darwinism. They believe that all human being are self interested. They project their own beliefs on other people. They justify their own selfishness by claiming they are merely following their own natural instincts like animals do.

But they feel offended when Muslims deem them as immoral. They want to feel good about themselves and therefore they claim they do perform good deeds. But they also admit that even when they act "morally" it is their subcontious behavior which is driven by desire to survive as a species. So they admit that they don't really believe in goodness. They just believe in not wanting to die.

    Volume 8, Book 76, Number 470:
    Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Apostle said, "The deeds of anyone of you will not save you (from the (Hell) Fire)." They said, "Even you (will not be saved by your deeds), O Allah's Apostle?" He said, "No, even I (will not be saved) unless and until Allah bestows His Mercy on me. Therefore, do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately, and worship Allah in the forenoon and in the afternoon and during a part of the night, and always adopt a middle, moderate, regular course whereby you will reach your target (Paradise)."

The “best reward” is Paradise, and “even more” is looking upon the Face of Allaah, as that was explained by the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), as was narrated by Muslim in his Saheeh (266) from Suhayb, according to whom the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“When the people of Paradise enter Paradise, Allaah will say, ‘Do you want anything more?’ They will say, ‘Have You not brightened our faces, admitted us to Paradise and saved us from Hell?’ Then the veil will be lifted and they will not have seen anything more dear to them than looking upon their Lord, may He be glorified and exalted. This is what is meant by ‘even more.’” Then he recited the verse (interpretation of the meaning):

“For those who have done good is the best reward and even more (i.e. having the honour of glancing at the Countenance of Allaah)”

      [Yoonus 10:26]

Thanks sk for this very illuminating inspection. It makes sense of what I have been taught.

            Where are you sourcing this?
My obstacle to seeking clarification on Islam that I seek is Arabic language because I feel the answers I seek are in Arabic websites. The internet is full of so many different Islamic cites (almost all the English one's are from Indo-Pak-Brit sources, offering advice and answering FAQs, but many Answers are based on different madhabs (Hanafi, Shafi, Maliki and Hanbali), then on different schools like Brelvis and Deobandis.
For quick searches Sheikh Dr Mohamad Salah I find a reliable source. But the details you are stacking here must be coming from an academic source. Can you share please.

              You are welcome.

What I have written is based on what I have learned while listening to tafseer courses by Muhammed Abdurrauf Safi (Ustad Abu Bakr Safi)

He is a student of Shaykh Abdussalam Rustami of Swabi. You can listen to his tafseer courses on http://www.quranawsunnat.com/?cat=34

In Arabic, I prefer listening to the following scholars:
              الشيخ أحمد بن عمر الحازمي

              الشيخ عبدالعزيز الطريفي

Another great man of wisdom is Mirza Yawar Baig
