  • How do you interpret the Quran.

I am curious to know how fellow muslim pashtuns comprehend the Quran.

Do you read it literally or metaphorically?

A mix of both? If so, how do you choose which method to apply?

Do you rely on an aid such as a hadith or mullah to help you with your understanding?

Or do you follow your own type of Islam?

For myself and my family, we have always understood the Quran literally but
often ignored the verses preferring to follow
the doctrines which my parents were taught by Abu Hanifa Mullahs.

We rarely read the quran in pashto, farsi or english. Often, we would read it in Arabic.

Mention those doctrines of Quran you have been thaught by Abu Haneefah mullahs.

Also, if you interpret Quran "directly" does that mean in Arabic? If yes, do you interpret Quran directly, do you tafseer bil Quran methodology?

I have no clue which part of the islamic doctrine that family follow belongs to the Abu Hanifa tradition. While I was growing I thought every muslims followed & understood the same islam.

I am sure you can find the differences between on the google.

I didn't say directly. Nobody in my family ever spoke arabic to my knowledge.
So they recited the quran in arabic without comprehending.
But they also had a pashto or farsi copy of it.
My parents also have a book which codifies & explains their version of Sunni Islam.

What I mean by literally is that we don't interpret the verses overall as metaphors.

Like when it's said in the Quran that Muhammad split the moon in two.
We interpret it as he really do it.
and not as some who say it had some other significance.

Some people view the quran as a work of poetry, so they rationalize these verses as it being part of artistic freedom.
So the moon didn't physical split in two but mean't something else; like breaking someone's heart.

Quran is a great book and a literary magnum opus but cannot be taken as a book of law or science or history. Its just a religious scripture but not a code of life. It needs a lot of reinterpretaion otherwise you will make one man equal to two women, allow polygamy and beating of wives, cutting of hands etc.

I read Quran with the help of an Afghan Hanafi Mullah in Pashto word by word. Now I understand it in Arabic directly as I learnt Arabic as a language. Metaphorical interpretation of Quran can still make it a useful book after 1400 years otherwise it is almost obsolete.

You have a habit of saying things and once you are asked to elaborate, you say you meant something else.

I have never seen anywhere in the Quran stating that Muhammed split the Moon. What kind of Quran did your parents own?

I agree, the Quran contains some wisdom & philosophy which can be useful today to ponder on.

I dont view the Quran being the word of Allah or sole the word of Muhammad
But as an amalgamation of several authors.

The same goes for other religious text. For example the Bhagavad-Gita:

Krishna tries to persuade the Prince Arjuna that he should do his duty and says to him:

Now, I am become Time, the destroyer of worlds

I said Literally not "directly" as you wrote.
We don't view the quran writing as abstract literature.
Also, I never said that I was taught by hanifa mullahs, my parents were.
I was taught Islam by my parents.

I can't help you by mentioning the doctrines of the Quran taught by Abu hanifa mulllas because I dont know.

                What information are you lacking?
How about you start to about yourself now.

                About The Moon splitting.
I am not sure if it's in quran or in hadiths. I haven't memorized the quran as some. But it is well known miracle attributed to Muhammad that muslim believe.
Neverless, it was an example, I dont know why you got stuck on that.

We own standard arabic Qurans & a farsi one. My parents sometimes read a farsi version & islamic doctrine book in farsi which simply explain the religion & rules further. (I dont know the name of it)
I never read it, I dont know farsi. My parents taught & explained islam to me.

My issues with islam stem from when I read the Quran in English and learned the standard doctrine in English.

The Wikipedia link you posted doesn't say Muhammed split the moon.

You obviously didn't read Quran in English. That's why you claim Muhammed split the moon. Neither did you read the wiki page.

From what I have seen so far, you seem to be ignorant about pretty much everything you talk about.

                    Okay whatever makes you happy.
I understand its difficult for you to accept the notion of a muslim rejecting islam as garbage because its the undeniable truth to you.
So you try rationalize & imagine that I was never a muslim, real muslim or a correct muslim.

I should have memorized the Quran as you did, only then would I have been a "true" muslim.

I hope shaytan pisses in your ear tonight.

I just check The Moon splitting is mentionned several times in Sahih Bukhari.

                      Volume 4, Book 56, Number 830:
                      Narrated Abdullah bin Masud:

During the lifetime of the Prophet the moon was split into two parts and on that the Prophet said, "Bear witness (to thus)."

                      Volume 4, Book 56, Number 831:
                      Narrated Anas:

That the Meccan people requested Allah's Apostle to show them a miracle, and so he showed them the splitting of the moon.

                      Volume 4, Book 56, Number 832:
                      Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:

The moon was split into two parts during the lifetime of the Prophet.

                      Volume 5, Book 58, Number 208:
                      Narrated Anas bin Malik:

The people of Mecca asked Allah's Apostle to show them a miracle. So he showed them the moon split in two halves between which they saw the Hiram' mountain.

                      Volume 5, Book 58, Number 209:
                      Narrated 'Abdullah:

The moon was split ( into two pieces ) while we were with the Prophet in Mina. He said, "Be witnesses." Then a Piece of the moon went towards the mountain.

                      Volume 5, Book 58, Number 210:
                      Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Abbas:

During the lifetime of Allah's Apostle the moon was split (into two places).

                      Volume 5, Book 58, Number 211:
                      Narrated 'Abdullah:

The moon was split (into two pieces).

                      NASA politely denies the event:
In 2010 a NASA Lunar Science Institute (NLSI) staff scientist said "No current scientific evidence reports that the Moon was split into two (or more) parts and then reassembled at any point in the past."

Yes I do. From an Islamic perspective, believing that a human being can have supernatural powers is heresy: Kufr = apostasy. Muhammed was a human being and he wasn't able to perform magic.

                            That's a unique perspective.

It's generally accepted that Muhammad didn't split the moon by his own but
                            with power of Allah.

Do you accept or deny the hadiths? Are you a Quranist?

No, I am a Muslim. We believe that anything described as a miracle is something Allah does. A Prophet doesn't perform miracles by himself.

The splitting of the moon was witnessed by people. Therefore it is mentioned in our books.
