  • Do Arab men hate women?

    Mona Eltahawy

    "Why do they hate us?"
With these five words in a controversial magazine article, Egyptian-American journalist shot to fame, unleashing a devastating critique of women’s rights in the Arab world.
In the season premiere of Head to Head , Mehdi Hasan challenges Eltahawy on her views regarding the status of women in Arab states.
Are Arab or Muslim societies inherently patriarchal? And how does the narrative of Islam as sexist play into geo-politics and Western stereotypes of the Middle East?
Joining the discussion is Dr Aitemad Muhanna of the London School of Economics’ Middle East Centre; self-proclaimed progressive Imam Dr Taj Hargey; and Dr Shuruq Naguib, a British-Egyptian academic from Lancaster University.

With one question, journalist Mona Eltahawy unleashed a harsh critique of women's rights in the Arab world.

It depends. I am not a expert on this subject, but since I have lived in the Arab world, I would say that Arab women overall are probably treated better by arab men then women in the south asia/central asia region. Even in the gulf, despite all the negatives things there, women actually have amount of freedom, at least more compared to our part of the world. That said, places like Saudi Arabia, Yemen and even Egypt have a long way to go, to give them equal rights

Arab men like many others tend to be victims of their own mentalities. They have been brought up that way by their mothers. It's wrong to assume that every Arab man hates women or is a misogynist.
I remember the Arab man who was enraged because the government notified him of his wife being too far away from him and they thought she was trying to run away from him. He was upset because his wife had been disrespected. The newer generation is growing to be very considerate and aware of such issues.
And Kushan, this woman was sexually assaulted and had both her arms broken and in casts for 3 months for protesting amongst other women in Egypt. She amongst many others have every right to be feminists. She doesn't have the right to be hypocritical or spreading hatred for men in the name of equality of rights for women though..
