Salamalaikum..
I went to an Islamic convention a couple of weeks ago and I was going through my notes just now and I found this very interesting and wanted to share it:
~ Mufti Muhammad ibn Adam on Patience in Times of Tribulation:
6 Steps to achieve inner peace (Suroor):
1. Look at people below you so you may never be ungrateful. Don't look at people above you in wordly matters. You might be sad now but there are people starving, there are people without arms and legs, there are people who can't see or talk.. Look at those and be grateful for all that you have.
2. Remove love for this duniya from your heart as the love for this duniya is the root of all sins. Rumi gave an allegory that this duniya is like water and we are likes boats - don't let water come into your boat if you don't want to drown.
3. Cut off all expectations from the creation of Allah subhana wa ta'ala. Don't expect things from people and you won't be disappointed. Don't expect them to be good to you, human beings were created flawed. Do things for the sake of Allah subhana wa ta'ala and not for the sake of people.
4. Constantly remember death. Life is trivial and will end in eternal bliss; this duniya is just a test. In this Duniya, be like a traveler. As mentioned earlier, we're like on a ship in this world, we think we're standing still but we're moving very quickly - similar to being on an airplane, you think you're not moving when in reality you're traveling at a very high speed. In reality, death could happen tomorrow; it could happen this very instant. Remember it.
5. Recite Qur'an Shareef in the morning.
6. Be optimistic, smile - it's the Sunnah of our beloved prophet salalaahu allahi wa salam.
=)
