  • New Study: Religion Will Completely Disappear By 2041

By Evan Bleier, Fri, July 26, 2013
A new study by a noted author and biopsychologist has found that atheism is most prevalent in developed countries.

Based on that finding, Nigel Barber concludes that religion will completely disappear by 2041. He discusses the topic in his new book “Why Atheism Will Replace Religion.”

According to his findings, “Atheists are heavily concentrated in economically developed countries.”

One of Barber’s central points is that religion decreases as personal wealth increases. His argument is that people don’t need supernatural beliefs when the real world is providing for their needs, MSN Now reported.

    Barber talks about the study:

“In my new study of 137 countries (1), I also found that atheism increases for countries with a well-developed welfare state (as indexed by high taxation rates). Moreover, countries with a more equal distribution of income had more atheists. My study improved on earlier research by taking account of whether a country is mostly Moslem (where atheism is criminalized) or formerly Communist (where religion was suppressed) and accounted for three-quarters of country differences in atheism.”

In his work, Barber dismisses the theory that religious groups will continue to dominate Atheists because they have more children. “Yet, noisy as they can be, such groups are tiny minorities of the global population and they will become even more marginalized as global prosperity increases and standards of living improve.”

He also concludes that as women become more integrated into the workforce, they will have fewer children, even if they are religious. “Moreover, as religious fundamentalists become economically integrated, young women go to work and produce smaller families, as is currently happening for Utah’s Mormons,” he says.

There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

IMO, religion will disappear in most of Western and Central Europe by 2050 but Christianity will surge in Sub-Saharan Africa and Islamism will surge in the Middle-East and South Asia.

If anything, traditionally "Sufi" and unobservant Muslim ethnic groups and communities are becomming more conservative with time. There are many internal and external causes of this phenomenon.

Perhaps Barber's study was mainly conducted in the western hemisphere.

This is astute. Refer in the Seminal Text, Marching Towards Hell, to page 157. Pay special attention to page 162 and 163 were what you discuss takes a more concrete form. Scheuer discusses Madawi versus Reza Aslan. The latter lives in a fool's paradise in which Islam will undergo its own enlightmentment equivalent phase and recede into a "reformed Islam." Madawi disagrees and notes based on the evidence in the coming era, Islam will be individualized to the extent that regime scholars will be dismissed and many will become "their own imam."

        He writes:
"This reality would negate the rosy expectations of Mr. Aslan et al, which are largely shared by Americans governing elite and its ethnic exiled expatriot advisers, all of whom seem to have forgotten that the hundred years war producing protestant reformation of messrs Luther and Calvin was precisely an effort to restore the direct relationship between man and God and eliminate the intermediary role played by the corrupt priesthood of the roman catholic church.."

It is prophesied in Islam that towards the end of time religion will decrease and only a few that have guidance will remain, so atheist giving this news is only confirming the legitimacy of Islamic teachings. Fail lol

Why say Christian, but instead of saying Islam you say 'Islamism' fools like you are just sheep that jump on the bandwagon.

I have been to more than 40 countries from all the continents. What I have seen that in developed and rich countries you will find very less religion. The same is true for families and individuals.

In our environment the comparatively richer Tajiks and Punjabis are less religious than the economically backward Pashtuns.

Religion will not completely disappear but the trend will be more towards secularism, spiritualism, Sufism or a non nonchalance and disinterest in religion.

Atheism is one extreme and Islamism another extreme. The middle path is secularism as we see in the developed West.

Religions like Catholicism will never disappear because it doe snot intervene in your personal, social, political and economic life. You just do few ceremonies, may attend the Church once a week and it does not prohibit any thing like what to eat or drink what to dress etc.

Once again, your assessment ignores the richness of history, especially the enforced Leninization of Uzbekistan and Tajikistan and Sovietization of northern Afghanistan.

Madawi disagrees and provides vivid logic and reasoning.

Statement of opinion - some might say this is exactly why it will disappear

This is why you simply cannot be agreed with. You want ideological people who actually believe what they have is from God to be modified for your personal views. By this logic, a firm believer would decide, for instance to eat pork or commit usury because he should view the prohibitions as not being real - even though the cornerstone of his faith rests on some of these things being actual godsent commandments.

The influence of communism or its related ideologies is now of bygone times. Only Socialism has some attraction but the ideals of Socialism have been achieved more efficiently and effectively in capitalist economies than the so called socialist or communist economies. Northern Afghanistan or Punjab is not at all influenced by any such ideology.

Madawi is not at all an authority that we must listen to her.She has written some good books on Saudi and other issues .Being an anthropologist She might have some good ideas and that too limited to her specialization and background of Saudi Arabia but cannot be declared an authority on issues we are discussing here.

The secret of the success of Catholicism is its being catholic, not orthodox or extremist evangelic. Thats why this is the world's largest religion. If Islam gets rid of Islamists then its catholic nature will also let it to survive in future other wise Islamists will give it the last push in its down fall. Sufi, Brelvi, Turkish , Indonesian, Central Asian, Western African Islam because of its catholicity is the counterpart of Christian Catholicism.

Yes, but in the ways that were errant and excessive your prior hero figures like the murderous Dr. Najib, a militant communist, was venerated. That is the issue - the same folks who were wrong before are now donning different clothes.

Only Socialism has some attraction but the ideals of Socialism have been achieved more efficiently and effectively in capitalist economies than the so called socialist or communist economies.

I won't argue this point because I have no issues with capitalism so long as it is not utilized as a cause celebre to rob indigenous people from other places.

Northern Afghanistan or Punjab is not at all influenced by any such ideology.

Sure it was. The Soviets, like Boris Gromov has a much easier time building facilities in the north than they did the south. They had much more help from Dostum for instance than they did Esmat Muslim.

Madawi is not at all an authority that we must listen to her.She has written some good books on Saudi and other issues .Being an anthropologist She might have some good ideas and that too limited to her specialization and background of Saudi Arabia but cannot be declared an authority on issues we are discussing here.

Sure it can. She is talking about the wide ranging effect the militancy has actually had on Islamic theology and state scholarship. In that vein, her looking glass view into Saudi and how greatly or little the populace and other regions venerate state sponsored scholar edicts is paramount to understanding where Islam will go.

The secret of the success of Catholicism is its being catholic, not orthodox or extremist evangelic.

You don't understand catholics. I spent many school years amongst them and met many a Jesuit. Their politics is considered by a chunk of the US to be extreme when it comes to certain social issues. This is why John Kerry had to make modifications to some of his views in his election period.

Thats why this is the world's largest religion.

Time, money, and power are better explanations.

If Islam gets rid of Islamists

It cannot be done if your views and policies are implemented. Rather, you are the reason Islamists exist in the initial. The Islamists are a reaction to the existence of Badlun Saheb, not vice versa.

then its catholic nature will also let it to survive in future other wise Islamists will give it the last push in its down fall.

I would disagree and still side with Madawi - most would agree her expertise trumps your opinion. This era and the coming centuries of turbulence and trouble will "sort the wheat from the chaff" and instead lead to a stronger and more vibrant Islamic character across regions of the Muslim world.

Sufi, Brelvi, Turkish , Indonesian, Central Asian, Western African Islam because of its catholicity is the counterpart of Christian Catholicism.
