  • Painting/drawing/pictures of animate objects are haraam in Islam

'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Shall I not send you on the same mission as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent me? Do not leave any built-up tomb without leveling it, and do not leave any picture in any house without erasing it." (Reported by Muslim and al-Nisaa'i )

Ibn 'Abbaas (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Every image-maker will be in the Fire, and for every image that he made a soul will be created for him, which will be punished in the Fire." Ibn 'Abbaas said: "If you must do that, make pictures of trees and other inanimate objects."

sahih Bukhari Vol 3, Book 34. Sales And Trade. Hadith 318.
Narrated By 'Aisha : (Mother of the faithful believers) I bought a cushion with pictures on it. When Allah's Apostle saw it, he kept standing at the door and did not enter the house. I noticed the sign of disgust on his face, so I said, "O Allah's Apostle! I repent to Allah and H is Apostle. (Please let me know) what sin I have done." Allah's Apostle said, "What about this cushion?" I replied, "I bought it for you to sit and recline on." Allah's Apostle said, "The painters (i.e. owners) of these pictures will be punished on the Day of Resurrection. It will be said to them, 'Put life in what you have created (i.e. painted).' " The Prophet added, "The angels do not enter a house where there are pictures."

sahih Bukhari Volumn 003, Book 034, Hadith Number 428.
    -----------------------------------------
Narated By Said bin Abu Al-Hasan : While I was with Ibn 'Abbas a man came and said, "O father of 'Abbas! My sustenance is from my manual profession and I make these pictures." Ibn 'Abbas said, "I will tell you only what I heard from Allah's Apostle. I heard him saying, 'Whoever makes a picture will be punished by Allah till he puts life in it, and he will never be able to put life in it.' " Hearing this, that man heaved a sigh and his face turned pale. Ibn 'Abbas said to him, "What a pity! If you insist on making pictures I advise you to make pictures of trees and any other unanimated objects."

sahih Bukhari Volumn 004, Book 054, Hadith Number 448.
    -----------------------------------------
Narated By Abu Talha : I heard Allah's Apostle saying; "Angels (of Mercy) do not enter a house wherein there is a dog or a picture of a living creature (a human being or an animal)."

sahih Bukhari Volumn 007, Book 063, Hadith Number 259.
    -----------------------------------------
Narated By Abu Juhaifa : The Prophet cursed the lady who practices tattooing and the one who gets herself tattooed, and one who eats (takes) Riba' (usury) and the one who gives it. And he prohibited taking the price of a dog, and the money earned by prostitution, and cursed the makers of pictures.
Bismillah, alhamdulillah, all praises due to Allah and may Allah increase the honor of Prophet Muhammad and protect our nation from any harm.

trees are not inanimate. and i suppose, everyone who ever created another object which moves, might as well prepare for hell.

I have a question, do the punishments in these hadiths have any basis in the Quran? does the quran say image or even idol "makers" will go to hell?

Of course creating images and idols are haram, according to the Quran, but I am just wondering about these punishments prescribed in the Hadiths. A lot of times Hadiths seem to add extra stuff on top of things which are said in Quran, which may on occasion totally change the meaning of what is said in the Quran, thats why many mullahs actually use hadiths while ignoring the Quran

there is a huge difference between a moving thing and a picture. by moving things do you mean cars? if you mean cars, cars are made us to take us from one place to another and they dont have any eyes or something living creatures have

If you have read every hadith in Bukhari you will come to the conclusion that every human minus the Prophets will be tortured for eternity.

In my "personal" opinion this is why anything said in a hadith has to match with the Quran, especially regarding punishments and rulings.
There are many hadiths out there that totally contradict the "spirit" of Quran

I agree with qais lots of the mullahs contradict verses. Honestly the Quran is the only truth but hadiths are there too clear people's misunderstandings. Of course the Quran says that idol worshipers will go to hell but I don't think it says anything about people going to hell for drawing people or objects. So what if you drew your wife or husband to show affection for them is that also haram?

so cars are an exception because they make life easier for us by taking us to places?? that is how it works?? how about passport pictures?? without them, we wouldn't be able to identify criminals..so if those are allowed, then why can't i have a look at my deceased grandfather's picture and have an idea of what he looked like?? and seriously?? cars are allowed because they don't have eyes?? they have headlights.. how about that???? i have never heard of a muslim comparing himself to God because he built an airplane or made a robot. why would God be upset over his creation using the gifts and talents that he gave them to their full potential??
don't you people feel bad for describing your religion as something silly as that???? like, seriously????

It means all those who are printing currency notes, running tv channels, making photos for documents, taking pictures while travelling, the whole world involved with internet including PF, You Tube, Face book and even Afgun whose picture appear on his posts will be burnt in flames of hell for ever!

Most of the Hadith have made a joke of Islam. All this is ridiculous, funny and only represent culture of the desert of Arabia who have nothing to do with fine arts, sculpture, photography, aesthetics, music, dance, poetry , all Haram. How can you build a civilization and a culture without these essential prerequisites?

The same retarded, retrogressive, obscurantist and ugly ideology is now a days only applied on Pashtuns as even Arabs themselves these days do not pay heed to such absurd so called hadiths.

^ we do need hadiths that are teaching us to pray and other essential items, not all hadiths are corrupt. The ones that go hand in hand with Quran are clearly the correct ones.

But yeah the many absurd hadiths out there which go against the Quranic spirit clearly should not be followed. I think it is high time for muslims to reexamine all these hadiths and perhaps make a list of them of which are going against Quran and which are not

Yes I totally agree with your approach. Quran may be made the criterion. I have heard that Imam Abu Hanifa used to do so and these days Turkish government or some university is sifting such hadith.

On the part of religion(faith, worship and ethics) we must have hadith which can be guide lines and quotations like of any great scholar or a prophet but on social, educational, political and cultural issues 1400 years old sayings cannot be made obligatory.
