Afghan universities shut after sectarian clash

Afghanistan has closed down three major public universities in the capital Kabul for more than a week after sectarian clashes left one student dead and nearly 30 others wounded, an official said Sunday.
The clashes erupted on Saturday after a ritual marking the Shiite Muslim festival of Ashura was interrupted by Sunni students.
One student was killed and 28 others were wounded as students attacked each other with sticks and rocks, according to interior ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi.
The violence primarily hit the university's hostel which houses students from the provinces, with witnesses saying one student was killed as he was pushed off a window from the third floor.
To avoid further violence, Afghanistan's higher education ministry closed down three major public universities for 10 days.
"It's a precautionary measure," Sediqqi told AFP.
Ashura is a religious ceremony marking the murder of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Mohammed, by the armies of the Caliph Yazid in 680.

Sectarian violence is rare in Afghanistan, which is gripped by a deadly Islamic insurgency led by the Taliban militants.
Political leaders including representatives from the Shiite minorities have called for restraint.

Afghanistan's Shiite minorities have gained significant freedom since the hardline Taliban were removed from power in a 2001 US-led invasion.
The Ashura ceremony, in which men beat their chests and self-flagellate their backs with sharp blades, has long been a magnet for sectarian attacks. Last year more than 80 people were killed when a suicide bomber blew himself up in Kabul.

It is not matter of a group or certain personalities,it is a more complicated matter of hundreds of years, deep inside.

If something turns radical it ends in such events.

you live in a country where people don't need to kill each other over religion but you appear to support such things, 2010, in muslim lands. how do you think that behaviour is conducive to the progress of muslim countries?
afghanistan has major issues to solve, and can do without sectarian disputes.
i am disappointed in the young as they are the ones who could be helping get over these impedimentss to progress and peace for muslims, within themselves.

you are using afghanistan as some measuring stick for pakistan. thank god that in afghanistan we don't have the sectarian issues that the pakis have. some young hot headed youth brawling on campus where a student was unfortunately killed is no comparison to drive by shootings or bombings in pakistan. the ttp killed quite a few shias the other day and took credit for it proudly, even if i don't care for the afghan taliban i am thankful they are not as sick as their paki counterparts.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

I just wanted to tell him, there is everywhere some hatred between the two groups, but pakistan is a mess.

Nobody knows which reason the perperators have behind it,they can't justify it because they are shia.......there are other reasons behind.
