I too believe that islam can be understood by simply believing the words given in the quran and that reported in ahadith. I also accept that some people demand(like) proof, like proof of a theorem. in my understanding word of the quran is for all humanity of all levels of intellect and ability to understand. The words communicate at all levels, proviso at different levels of intellect there are appropriate ways of knowing, where belief supersedes scientific evidence and logic (but it's not mutually exclusive). Both the believer and the logician (or the scientist) will reach the same answer.
But like many previous debates where members have shovelled words resembling genetic evidence for supporting creation and dogma for discrediting evolution, my response is, if you want proof, or embryologic evidence, or by logic, then learn logic and sciences first before you examine quranic text for such proofs.
When i lived in hamburg i met some young binary muslims at the islamic centre, who knew i was a physicist, asked me to illuminate other youngsters that what we know in science has been foretold in the almighty quran, their specific question was related to black holes*. I hestitated with the thought that my knowledge is finite, my physics knowledge is even more finite, and later i proceeded in explaining the futility of this discourse analysis, to discover these youngsters had even more feeble knowledge of science and formalised verbal reasoning. I left the centre with parting remarks that i accepted islam before studying physics, to a chorus of subhanallah, and my limitation of knowledge to provide an erudite service, they were disappointed. So if you want proofs, go to school and learn first.
This engineering student is an educated fool.
*in that nanosecond hesitation i pondered if the youngsters can differentiate general theory from special theory, or if they have used formulae of chandrasekhar and the TOV limits or solved newman's axisymetric solutions . . . . I knew my limits. These youngsters, irony, irony, (brave new world, AH).Last edited by torkham; 10-28-2012, 02:03 PM.
