Gov't of China doesn't want any other group to become powerful enough to threaten its own grip on power, CP ruthlessly attacks anyone that might create an opposition movement. Given their recent history this is understandable; not too long ago a very chaotic China was ruled by multiple warlords.

I think a small step in the right direction is to stop buying things from that country. I wish that we would stop supporting that regime by supporting their economy. Then again I'm typing this on a Macbook Air, and I have an iPod in my pocket...
