Do Muslim tolerate non-Muslim?

One of my Indian friend wants me to go to AR Rahman concert with him..he is a Hindu guy but very open minded...he says he believes in all gods. I was actually introduce to AR Rahman by this guy... long story short... i was goggling AR Rahman and find out that he was actually Hindu who converted to Islam...and yet he has millions of Hindu follower...he is well respected by Hindus.....but wt would have happen if a Muslim singer or musician converts from Islam? Say a Farhad Darya announces that he is a Hindu, or Christian...will he survive a day if he goes back to Afghanistan?

lots of hindu converts (converted to islam) in india were persecuted.
Didnt you hear about that hindu major who faked conversion to islam married afghan girl here and later ran away to india and became a hindu.
