Is this really true? I have people telling me if people start at you too much they will nazar you. Is this true? Why would Allah give humans such power if its true.
Afridaya you reminded me of the INDIAN NAZAR commercials where person A is jealouse of person B and stares at B,a blue ray comes outta his eyes and hits person B,then there is a blue stone advertised proven to work as a shield against blue/jealousy/nazar rays.

From the book "The Jinn and Human Sickness" By Dr Abu'l- Mundhir Khaleel ibn Ibraaheem Ameen
Chapter 3
The evil eye
The evil eye(nazar) refers to when one person harms another by means of the eye.
Ibn Al-Qayyim said: The origin of the evil eye is liking something, then the evil soul follows it, persues it and seeks to do harm to it, seeking help to apply its poison by looking at the subject.
Ibn Manzoor said: It is said "So-and-so was struck by evil eye" if an enemy or an envious person looks at him and he if affected by that and becomes sick as a result."
Al-Haafiz ibn Hajar said: What is meant by the evil eye is looking at something with admiration contaminated with envy from one who is evil in nature so it results in harm.
Proof from the Qur'an
Surah Yusuf (12:67)
"And he said: 'O my sons! Do not enter by one gate, but enter by different gates, and I cannot avail you against Allaah at all. Verily, the decision rests only with Allaah. In him, I put my trust and let all those that trust, put their trust in him."
The majority of Mufassireen are agreed that the brothers of Yusuf(AS) were handsome and good looking, and Ya'qoob(AS) feared that the people might affect them with the evil eye, for the evil eye is something real.
Evidence from the Sunnah
It was narrated by Abu Hurayrah said: The Messenger of Allah said: "The evil eye is real," and he forbade tattoos."
Sahih Muslim
It was narrated from A'ishah that the Prophet(SAW) said " Seek refuge with Allah from the evil eye, for the evil eye is real."
The difference between the evil eye and envy
The word Haasid(envier) is more general in meaning than the word 'Aa'in(one who puts the evil eye on another), hence in Surah Al-Falaq mention is made of seeking refuge with Allah from the evil of the one who envies.
The Haasid(envier) is an envious man whose envy is accompanied by resentment, so he wishes that the blessing be taken away, whereas the 'Aa'in( the one who puts the evil eye on another) simply likes a thing. Hence the evil eye may come from a righteous man or woman, and a man may put the evil eye on his own wealth, child or family without realizing it. But the evil eye and envy have the same effect, which is causing harm to the thing that is liked or envied.
Last year, i had a huge graduation party thrown for me. That whole night people kept on giving me compliments....and my uncle told my mom to spaand me, but she didnt. That next morning. I was sick for nearly 3 months. I had to go to the doctors every week....i couldnt eat, i had a hard time breathing. It was so hard for me to complete Ramadan, but i did it anyways....
i never believed in nazar until that night. Be careful with compliments, it does give you the evil eye =)
i didn't believe in nazar... i am the type of person who doesn't believe in any normal afghan/muslim superstitions but nazar is something that made me sick many times from childhood till now... once i even had a mark of an eye on my hand... it wouldn't go away, it became like a wound then after a few weeks it fell of itself.
I totally get what Feroza is saying. I didnt believe in nazar at all! i thought it was total BS and every time my mom would spaand me, i would complain that my hair smelled like smoke.....
last year i had gotten very ill, i was nearly hospitalized. and everyone said it was nazar from a certain night.
Sometimes you dont believe in nazar until you experience it yourself.
Nazar is culturally exagerrated, yes, but its roots are clarified in Ahadeeth which is known as the concept of the 'evil eye' which has various ways prescribed in Sunnah to protect oneself from it. I believe in it. Of course, taking the superstitious approach to things is incorrect and clashes with the laws of Islam and these include things like burning spand. Rather you should follow the measures recommended by Rasulullah SAW (Ruqyah as stated by Brother Inqilab) which go back to the Quran and Sunnah.
