All of the Companions were not scholars. Only a few of them gave fatwas. The rest of the Companions followed those who were the scholars among them.

The Qur'an Majid commands us to ask those who know. This is how the Companions practiced; they followed the scholars among them. Those who came after them did the same.

Throughout the history of Islam the four madhhabs have been a source of unity. Muslims recognize the validity of all four madhhabs.
