  • Al-Tabari, superiority of arabs?

I have a question, is the following qoute by Al Tabari considered as authentic or weak??? because it clearly condradicts prophet(pbuh) last sermon in which he talks about the equality of all people

"Arabs are the most noble people in lineage, the most prominent, and the best in deeds. We were the first to respond to the call of the Prophet. We are Allah’s helpers and the viziers of His Messenger. We fight people until they believe in Allah. He who believes in Allah and His Messenger has protected his life and possessions from us. As for one who disbelieves, we will fight him forever in Allah’s Cause. Killing him is a small matter to us"

i am not against arabs, but i am just wondering, because in another forum, some guy is using the above qoute to show racism in Islam. To me it also looks fake because it contradicts every thing in Quran and hadiths, but i want to just confirm

Tabari was a renowned historian. He wrote a voluminous history of the world and actually did as honest a job as he could.

It was merely a jingoistic statement on his part, but he does not claim that orthodoxy endorses this.

It is not that much different than the biographers of Lincoln and others who espouse the perfecting of the "greatest union" and the idea that America is the "last great hope."

He lived in a time when rule was expanding the new power was taking hold East, West, North, and South.

^ so basically it was just a "statement" and nothing to do with Quran/Hadiths?

Well I think the Quran appears to address it in the verse of tribes and languages. And the final sermon also dispels this. The Prophets personal relationship with Salman of Persia and Bilal as well as his Egyptian wife Maryam do not provide a single scriptural instance of him taking something away from these folks because they were non Arabs. In fact, he gave the jewish convert the judgement position over Banu Qurayzah and also alotted one of the jewish converts as his personal scribes.

Let us be realistic though. Any army, whether it be Ahmad Shah Abdali's army, the American Army, the Taliban forces, or the first large group of Arab fastidious armies that marched forth have folks of all types.

Hadith literature in fact supports this. Not every contemporary of the Prophet patterned his behavior off the Prophet's completely. And one might very well suppose that when they came into contact with Persians, Indians, and the like that they exerted superiority tactics over these people.

In this same way, not every American is a Sam Adams or an Abraham Lincoln. You very rarely get a Dr. Ron Paul who is studied in constitutional matters and patterns his voting based on constitutionalism.

So if you have a Ron Paul encountering an Iranian physician, he will take note of this person's promise, prowess, and capabilities and not underestimate him.

If you put Larry the Cable Guy in that situation, I am sure that the result will be entirely different.

Perhaps another empiric proof of this is that in the moments after the Prophet's passing the Muslims had debates between the Ansars and the Muhajireen about leadership. The felt capable enough to nominate folks for the Caliphate and it was really Omar and Abu Bakr, with their rousing speech that convinced these groups that the most fitting thing would be to put Abu Bakr, a Quraysh tribal member into power.

This is important because it indicates that the Prophet himself did not delineate on tribal superiority as had he indicated that the Quraysh were automatically to be given leadership, the ansar would not have briefly broken ranks like this.

In fact the Quran appears to appeal to the Quraysh that their leadership position in Arabia as gaurdians of the holy house entailed responsiblity as much as prestige.

Al Tabari = From Tabiristan = Province of iran.

                He was "Iranian"....

                lol

even then ...that statement would have been true in his own times. But today is a different story..and his statement was not a prediction!

Compare that to what Allah SWT says:

The Arabs of the desert are the worst in unbelief and hypocrisy and most fitted to be in ignorance of the command which Allah hath sent down to His Messenger: but Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

                  9:97 Surat At-Tawbah

Tabari and his likes are not Prophets or demagogues. They are humans and humans have their opinions.

^ Indeed, Quran has quotes going against Arabs and their culture at the time.

Also clearly this shows how this great book is for all humans and not just arabs, as some ignorant people argue, even some on this forum by calling Islam a (Arab) religion

There also many hadiths by the prophet(pbuh) that go against arabs(Bedouins)

Islam was an alien thing to the Arabs which is why the Arabs were the first opponents of Islam. Arabs fought the Prophet SAW and tried to kill him, his companions, and his relatives. The Prophet SAW suffered more at the hands of the Arabs than any other group. After his death they revolted against Islam in the Apostasy Wars.

The members here who blame a race or an entire ethic group are scapegoating to cover up their own failures. They do that to deflect attention from their own shortcomings.
