I was read about the Qadiriyyah sufis and they made a very good point, which made me think, i think there is a bigger war, but a war that is going on in our inner self.
"Qadiriyyah Sufis beleive An emphasis on the struggle against the evil desires of the inner self. Gilani described it as "The greater holy war." The aim of is inner struggle is repentance, which is attained in two stages: first, repudiating evil deeds forbidden by religious law, and two, overcoming evils such as greed, vanity, and fear."
I beleive, feelings and urges, such as desire, sin, greed and to some extent fear, all contribute to ones inner battle to resolve it, at times, having a desire, such as to eat unhealthy food, can be like a war, to battle the urge and defend the body, if one can develop this strong attribute towards ones character and way of life, I feel it is very beneficial to all.
