  • Do you waste?

    Assalaam walaikom everyone!

I was just thinking of how wasteful we can often be. I won't lie, I am a bit of a tree huger myself. But I sometimes think we waste more than trees.

I was thinking tonight of how this life is only temporary. We think of waste and we automatically think of left over food, or old clothing or "junk". I began to think further than that.

I began to think about family and life in general. Do you have a TV? In your living room, are your couches set up so everyone can see the TV and not set up so you can communicate with each other? Do you waste valuable time in front of a TV? How many hours? Do you wait between commericals or computer games to pray? What you watch on tv, is it wasteful? I once heard a Rabbi say that a TV is like "sewage" in his house, and he refuses to have one. I watch TV from time to time, and it does seem like all that is on is about haram topics. I turn on the radio, a lot of the words are haram.

How much time do you spend with your family? With loved ones? Do you do it while watching TV? Or do you even eat dinner together?

So much of our time is wasted on petty things that will mean nothing to us once we die. I look at the Quran, the copy I have is 348 pages. There are 365 days a year. If I took 1 minute a day to read Quran, and read only one page, I would have read Quran at least once per year. If I took those 2 hours I sit in front of the TV for one day, I could help out those less fortunate. I could improve my faith. I could pray. I could spend time with my family.

This is possibly a very scattered topic. It is fresh on my mind and I am sorting out my thoughts as I write. But inshAllah you all understand what I am saying. Try not to be wasteful of material objects that Allah swt has provided us, but try not to be wasteful with yourselves. You never know when this life will be over and you will be judged on the actions you do now. Don't waste time...

That's pretty important... when I was opening up the thread I thought about how whenever I don't want food or something to go to waste I say I'll eat it later and then when I put it in the fridge ... most of the time it goes to the trash unfortunately...

but truly it's not just material objects that have gone to waste but time that is slipping by fast ... may Allah tala awaken our souls and hearts InshaAllah.

Some reflection on this is needed for sure =)

Elaborating on this, is when we all have children of our own.

We teach them what and who we want them to be. Nowadays it is easier to sit your kid in front of a TV to keep them quiet while you can go about your house duties and so on. But instead of sitting your kid in front of haram on tv, why not sit the child in front of Qu'ran recitations? Sometime Islamic?

It takes a lot of time, but we also need to not waste our childrens time. From a young age, they should be learning about Islam and yes that requires extra parenting, but it will have extra reward. Kids learn from tv how to dress, what to say, whats "cool"...their minds are so naive.

I sometimes throw trash into the recycle bin just to annoy my mom when I visit her.

Anyways I for one believe we're all gonna kill eachother way before mother nature gets a chance to do us in
