After the conferment of Prophethood on the Holy Prophet.Allah revealed the Holy Quran to Hazrat Muhammad. The Quranic verses were revealed at intervals so as to familiarize the Muslims with the Commandments of Allah and enable to follow these in practice and memorize them.
As the words os the Quran continued to be revealed. Hazrat Jibrael explained the verses and the order of their composition to the Holy Prophet. After the revelation, the Holy Prophet used to recite the verses to his companions. This continued for twenty-three years, which is the duration of the period of revelation.
The Quran is not a written in which subject and topics may be fixed and chapters arranged in a given order. It is a spoken message which Allah revealed to the Prophet according to the manner and arrangement thought fit by Him. Some Surah were named according to the event or object occurring in the Surah. For example, the second Surah is named Al-Baqrah because it explains the important event of the worship of calf by the Bani Israel.
When all ayats of a Surah were revealed, the Holy Prophet named the Surah and fixed its beginning and end under Divine Guidance. After completion, the Surahs were arranged in proper sequence for the Holy Quran
