  • cosmetic surgery and piercings

    Salaam everyone!

I am curious what everyones view is on piercings and cosmetic surgery.

I have my nose pierced - I did it before I accepted Islam. And I asked 2 different imams and one said it is fine, one said to remove it. I was left confused. I don't really want to remove it because I will have an ugly hole in my nose.

Another is laser eye surgery. I know cosmetic surgery is haram and we aren't to alter how Allah created us. I just got laser eye surgery, which was 5 minutes, pain-free and the BEST thing I have ever done for myself. And tonight I was telling my friend about it, and she said it is haram because if Allah swt has chosen for me to have bad vision, I am correcting what he has destined for me. I disagreed because it didn't change how I look, it just changed how I see back to how it was when I was younger. And, wearing glasses with hijab hurts my ears - and I have been wearing contacts for like 15 years and my eyes were getting all red and bloodshot.

What is everyones take on these sort of things?

surgery for vision is not haram. allah does not intend for you to walk around and be blind even though you can help it.

I am no bird, and no nest ensnares me.

non commercial would cost less if he was in charge himself which he plans on doing. right now it's n herat but soon it will be in qanadahar.

      exactly!
she was rambling on about al-qadar (what Allah pre-determines for us) and that Allah pre-determined that I would have bad vision. But I don't think thats true. Al-Qadar is not evil - Allah does not pre-determine evil in our lives. Just the good stuff. We create the evil ourselves. Plus, it is scientifically proven that many things like computers/too much reading/bad genetics destroy your eyes. Not destiny!

          wa salaam

Nose piercing is not haraam, as long as the piercing doesn't reach the point of mutilation

Laser eye surgery is not haraam, it's not changing the creation of Allaah, rather it's fixing something that has long term benefits

The criteria is to be aware that only qualified individuals are doing the procedures

Let us refrain from personal opinions when it comes to matters of Deen. Rasulullah SAW said if you don't have any words of benefit to share, stay quiet. And that is the best for you.

To answer your questions Muslimah, you basically draw the line when your purpose of adornment clashes with changing the creation of Allah. Nose piercings, or any piercings of the sort are not considered haraam for that reason. Piercings are permissible in Islam for the simple reason that Allah has made it permissible for women to beautify themselves with jewellery of gold and silver, either for themselves, or that of the pleasure of their husbands. Things like tongue and belly piercings would be slightly different, because alongside pain, the issue of health problems arising as a result is highly likely and Allah has forbidden a person to do anything by means of which he harms himself. As for laser eye surgery, again, Shari'ah does not prevent us from doing things which are of benefit to us, even if they involve physical changes. Laser surgery does not change the creation of Allah, rather is a means to strengthen weak vision, thus it is permissible.

Allah make easy our understanding of the Deen and give us the taufeeq to be able to implement Islam and its principles in our lives.
