  • Religion may become extinct in nine nations, study says

A study using census data from nine countries shows that religion there is set for extinction, say researchers.

The study found a steady rise in those claiming no religious affiliation.
The team's mathematical model attempts to account for the interplay between the number of religious respondents and the social motives behind being one.

The result, reported at the American Physical Society meeting in Dallas, US, indicates that religion will all but die out altogether in those countries.
The team took census data stretching back as far as a century from countries in which the census queried religious affiliation: Australia, Austria, Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Switzerland.

Their means of analysing the data invokes what is known as nonlinear dynamics - a mathematical approach that has been used to explain a wide range of physical phenomena in which a number of factors play a part.
One of the team, Daniel Abrams of Northwestern University, put forth a similar model in 2003 to put a numerical basis behind the decline of lesser-spoken world languages.

At its heart is the competition between speakers of different languages, and the "utility" of speaking one instead of another.

"The idea is pretty simple," said Richard Wiener of the Research Corporation for Science Advancement, and the University of Arizona.
"It posits that social groups that have more members are going to be more attractive to join, and it posits that social groups have a social status or utility.

"For example in languages, there can be greater utility or status in speaking Spanish instead of [the dying language] Quechuan in Peru, and similarly there's some kind of status or utility in being a member of a religion or not."
Some of the census data the team used date from the 19th century
Dr Wiener continued: "In a large number of modern secular democracies, there's been a trend that folk are identifying themselves as non-affiliated with religion; in the Netherlands the number was 40%, and the highest we saw was in the Czech Republic, where the number was 60%."

The team then applied their nonlinear dynamics model, adjusting parameters for the relative social and utilitarian merits of membership of the "non-religious" category.

They found, in a study published online, that those parameters were similar across all the countries studied, suggesting that similar behaviour drives the mathematics in all of them.

And in all the countries, the indications were that religion was headed toward extinction.

However, Dr Wiener told the conference that the team was working to update the model with a "network structure" more representative of the one at work in the world.

"Obviously we don't really believe this is the network structure of a modern society, where each person is influenced equally by all the other people in society," he said.

However, he told BBC News that he thought it was "a suggestive result".
"It's interesting that a fairly simple model captures the data, and if those simple ideas are correct, it suggests where this might be going.

"Obviously much more complicated things are going on with any one individual, but maybe a lot of that averages out."

Europeans have always been staunch haters of the divine they always hated anything that required them to think deeper than ther shallow materialistic level of things Hence why any secularism is a form of europeanism and just slavery to European pagan heritage and shallow minded lust for materialism.

You want to exclude the creator from his creations... hehehe
The One who runs the whole system of the universe.
Religion will never extinct but the materialistic world and the ungrateful ones will definitely perish.

Eurocentric Capitalistic Secular culture doesn't officially believe in a Deity; but in a metaphoric sense you are right.

If we expand "god" to mean something given aggrandized importance; Secular Eurocentric Culture idolizes the flesh, and anything material; they live for greed.

It's interesting to note since I'm currently in a masters program for Applied Mathematics; centering Dynamics of Complex Physical Systems in the Environment. The Modeling system of Nonlinear Dynamics is derived from Game Theory; which is an idea dealing with Equilibriums that arise from what is called feedback mechanisms; i.e. a response is made based on preexisting conditions. The problem however is with social models of game theory is that any system can be modified arbitrarily; so what they prove is hegemony of power structure not legitimacy of social molds. In essence that secular systems are derived more from mind control of populations rather than actual direct benefit.

that's not true scimitarx. the irish, italians and spanish have been strict catholic countries and the other european countries had their christian religions. they have all definitely loosened up from being religious. italy's president puts virtual porno on tv and it is mostly accepted now.
i think most people, even if they don't follow a specific religion still believe in a creator.

if nothing else, we will have euro maury's, i dont mind laughing at the expense at these lost fools souls.

There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

you keep bashing Europe how about america where around 30% are satanists.
Btw i disagree partially with your view it seems like the random american version of how Europe is.

Americans actually think Europe has it worst than them in terms of education, social welfare etc.

Those shows are productive, in a sense, that it shows reality, through these shows soceity can highlight their errors and help to improve ones lives by addressing such problems openly.

Lost souls? I am sure if the Muslim world had their maury shows we would be seeing men with 20 wifes, mothers of suicide bombers, victims of bacha bazi, violennt husbands, depressed mothers, mothers whose daughters were lashed because they were raped etc.

                        Dont make fun of others!

                          It's a cyclic trend.

Just wait for the economy to implode (it will eventually), and you'll see how many people turn to religion in a heart beat.

Man has an inherent desire to revere something greater than him and to hold it in awe, this is a universal human trait.

The material lifestyle which captalism offers is not very fulfilling spiritually and emotionally, though I do praise many of the positive aspects of western civilization such as:

                            - Organization.
                            - A more egalitarian society (than many of the eastern societies of the third world).
                            - Respect and rights for weaker members of society.

                            other things.

As maneatinglizard has rightfully said this is just a phase which will inevitably change if conditions alter. The whole thread is one of Tormana's wet dreams. If we follow the "logic" of these atheists and haters of religion then the religious-right in America wouldn't have so much power because technological and economic improvements inevitably lead to a decline if not complete extinction of religion.
                            * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

                            Shukran ya Masr!!!

Thanks to Egypt for supporting Bangladesh against Pakistani harassment and support for terrorists and war criminals!!

If the recent economic downturn hasn't changed any minds, I doubt an economic collapse will have any effect.

Anyway, the primary motivation for religious activities is often community. Unless all other means for community are shot, I doubt religious beliefs will change.
