You people label EVERYTHING "debate" if Zakir Naik is in it :| Dude, he was just a speaker among a group of people. Like, seriously? I know we don't like to know about it and all, but there actually is such a thing as a moment to talk about something that you consider an issue without feeling like you've won or lost during that conversation.

Dr Zakir Naik and Madani Saab are the only ones making sense regarding Islam

the rest are just being intolerant and pushing their distorted views regarding Islam.

You don't have to generalize either.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

heee hee (We clearly need an emoticon for dramaqueen.)

Back to the point -- yeah. We tend to think everything's a debate if Zakir Naik is on the pedestal with anyone else. That's simply not so, k?

Guys, ROshina is one of those people who hates Zakir Naik with a deep passion. She announced that she is going to write her doctoral thingy to refute and expose Zakir Naik.

Feminist jihad against Zakir Naik LOL

To be very honest I think Dr. Zakir Naik is a snake oil salesman; but why is he such a focus anyways????????? He's a small fry in a big fryer. He says so many things which are ludicrously wrong on the scientific level that I can't take him seriously. That isn't to say he doesn't have one or two clever ideas, but that doesn't redeem him

both Roshina and everyone else are making much ado about nothing.

A very interesting way of putting: "a critical analysis of Zakir Naik as an established authority on and teacher of Islam," no?

And, God, no! That's my bachelor's thesis, not my Doctoral thesis. He's not worthy enough of a doctoral thesis for me. I have many other important topics to research instead, man.

Reminder: Bachelor's thesis is about a year long; a doctoral thesis is at least 5 years long. Can you IMAGINE Qrratu doing a study on Naik for FIVE whole years? That'd be a disaster. This one year is hell enough already, and I've to have my teachers remind me every week why I'm doing it and why it matters But lotsa lessons are being learned this way, aaaaaaand I get to learn to let him talk without thinking too lowly of him. It's not that bad. :D

Annnd my personal views of Naik are mostly the same as Scimitars. Except, to add in that I find Naik very entertaining.

MM Azami: The History of the Qur'anic Text from Revelation to Compilation: A Comparative Study with the Old and New Testaments

A much more cogent and realistic scholar. Devastates G Puin, Cook and Crone, etc.

Zakir Naik is a great man. He might have some statements which are questionable. But he is a good remedy for modernists and kuffar.

Thanks to him in Afghanistan thousands of people have turned interested in Islam again.

His videos are translated in Farsi and Pashto and are sold everywhere in Afghanistan.

He has inspired many young men and women.

You are doing a bachelors degree and you talk so much, imagine if you would enter into a doctoral program.

I dunno much about him. However, there are far more complex issues that are being dealt with that will make a bigger impact in future studies. Unfortunately, what it appears that Edge may be referring to is that there is a Baptistization of Islam going on that may create turbulence down the road. People are pursuing a superficial understanding of their religion without understanding and will be at a loss when scriptural criticism sweeps up like a Tsunami onto the unprepared. Its like the Jesus Camp effect, except in the Islamic world

So the issue with the realm of Quranic research and the Western Orientalist Islamic Studies Programs are that everyone appears to think that they have to come up with an amazing new idea so that A) They can get name recognization for coming up with something original and B) They practice revisionst history.

For example, there were two authors named Cook and Crone who are at Princeton and are disciples of Wansborough... they attempted to show a number of idiotic things in their book Hagarism.

Gerard Puin is sort of an offshoot and somehow, despite the utter lack of scriptural evidence has come up with a theory of Muhammad (S) being sort of the equivalent of a Christian reformer. This is after he studied the Sanaa fragments and found no corroborating evidence for it.

The issue is that the early islamic scholarship (the same folks that I believe Roshina called small Arab men, mind you) were actually wonderful and very honest in how well they collected data and preserved it for posterity. For example, Bukhari preserved the alternate reading of Abdullah ibn Masud for Surah Al Lail: Waz Zakara Wal Unsaa versus the Uthmanic reading of Wa ma khalaqaz zakara wal unsaa (by the man and the woman versus by the creation of the man and the woman).

What has happened now, is that there are isolated Muslim scholars that MM Azami who deal swift and decisive blows to Puin and others... but these folks are few. They have left behind the amazing scriptural criticism and textual analysis that people like Suyuti (another small arab man) lived for.

Its a sad fact that when the sanaa fragments were found, the Yemeni authorities had to outsource the study of them to the Germans as opposed to any viable Muslim scholar.
