  • What is "wahabi"

YouTube - Sheikh Yusuf Estes discusses the terms "Wahabi" and "Salaafi"

I've seen quite a few people use the word "wahabi" here and it shouldn't be because it is a name of Allah. So it should be treasured rather than referred to some random people as a filthy word, astagfirullah. Watch this video and inshallah please refrain from using the word except for Allah.

I don't agree, Wahhabi is a a term that's associated with the Khariji movement of Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab. Saying that we shouldn't call people Wahhabi who follow this stream of thought is like saying we shouldn't call Ismai'li's as they are because Isma'il is a prophet's name or that we shouldn't call 'Alawiyeen as they are because Al-'Ali is one of the isma Allah. We clearly draw a distinction between Al-Wahhab the name of Allah(swt) and Wahhabi , followers of Muhammad Ibn Abdul Wahhab.

Albeit, I much rather refer to "Wahhabis" as Khariji as that's more accurate.

Scimitar lala there is a big difference between the name of a prophet and a name of Allah.

I was just saying not to refer to people with Allahs names because they are precious and they are not to be played with.

Wahab is not a name of Allah Subhana wa Taala.

            al-Wahab is.

This particular contention makes no sense. To look at another example, al-Azeez is a name of Allah Subhana wa Taala, and yet it would not be disrespectful to ascribe someone or something to "Azeeziyyah." In fact, a district of Makkah al-Mukarramah is named as such.

            Salam Alaikum

It's not that important what a wahabi is, what's important is to realize that anyone that tries to throw light on the injustices in this world, in particular against muslims, is branded a wahabi which has become synonomous with terrorism. This way a non-practicing muslim, sufi, salafi, shia, sunni, muslims of any background who are ALL grossed out by the political, social, cultural, and economic targetting of muslims is branded a terrorist sympathizer. It should not be surprising that a person who tries to follow 'rigorous' (as someone here put it) Islam is a wahabi.

What is a wahabi (aqueda - other modern day practitioners)? they are essentially reactionists. Get rid of the reason for which they react to and they simply do not exist.

You make a fair point; but we also have to distinguish Wahhabi as a term used/applied in the Media for Industrial Capitalist Geopolitical agenda vs. how it's used in context to Islamic streams of thought.

if follwoing quran and sunnah without mixing hinduism, greek philosophy, zoroastrianism and secularism is Wahhabism, then I am a staunch wahhabi.

I was speaking in terms of the popular usage in the western media. Should've made myself clearer. It was meant for karachiwala schtick.

wahabi is used as a code word by shias to talk filth against sunni muslims.
i dont think wahabi itself even exists, remember shias also call sunnis Bakri when they attack.

no it's the way that Muhammad Abdul Wahhab described it.
