Tawheed is belief and confirming monotheism. Meaning belief in one single deity who is the creator, orginator, sustainer and ruler ofall creation.

Tawheed or monotheism is the only true religion. And all prophets were messengers and prophets of allah, and their message was tawheed.

Noeh, Abraham, Musa, Isah and Muhammad were all prophets who preached tawheed.

    Tawheed is of 3 categories:

Tawheed al Uloohiyyah: singling out one deity in worship
    - This measn that you believe only in one god and you worship him alone. You do not associate others in worship with him.

Tawheed al Ruboobiyyah: Singling out one deity in lordship
    - This means believing in Allah allone as your lord, who is the lord of all the creation.

Tawheed Asma Wa Al Sifat: Allah's names and attributes.
    - This means belief in Allah's names and attributes as described in the Qur'an and explained by the prophet Muhammad sal allahu alayhi wasallam. This means that you must confirm that Allah is Ar-rahman, ar-raheem, ghafar, ghafor, jabaar, razaaq, wahaab, raoof etc etc. You must confirm belief in ALlah as he has described himself in his own words in Qur'an. And not deviating and believing in Allah based on Greek philosophy or Hindu superstition.

The first pillar of Islam is called the ‘Shahadah’ or the testification. The one declaring to be a Muslim is testifying that there is none worthy of worship, but Allah and that Muhammad is His Messenger. To worship Allah (swt) exclusively is what is known as Tawheed in Arabic. The opposite of Tawheed is called Shirk, which is to associate partners with Allah (swt).

Allah (swt) has specific names, attributes, functions and commands which are exclusively for Him. To divert any of these or to associate other with them is Shirk. Allah (swt) sent his Messenger to teach mankind about Tawheed, from the time of Adam, Nuh (Noah), Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses), Isa (Jesus) to final Messenger Muhammad (saw). Allah (swt) say

“Verily we sent a messenger to every community, proclaiming worship Allah and reject the taghout (what is worshipped besides Allah)” [Surah An Nahl 16:36]

Tawheed has two main Pillars which are firstly negation of any other idols (kufr bit taghout) and then affirming belief in Allah (imanu-billah). Allah (swt) says

“Whoso ever rejects the false idols and believes in Allah has grasped the knot of Islam that will not break”[Surah Al Baqarah 2:256]

THE FIRST PILLAR - REJECTING FALSE DEITIES
Anything worshipped, obeyed or followed other than Allah (swt) is referred to as a Taghout. This can be in the form of a man, angel, jinn, rock, tree or even man-made law. It is essential that one declaring belief in Islam recognises the taghout and dissociates oneself from it.

The scholars of Islam have expounded on the topic, stipulating the following five conditions to reject the taghout; (1) To recognise it as falsehood, (2) to keep distance from it, (3) To declare animosity towards it (4) to have hatred towards it (5) To declare disbelief on it.

THE SECOND PILLAR – BELIEF IN ALLAH
This pillar of Tawheed is affirming three main aspects; (1) Belief in Allah exclusive right of Lordship (Rububiyah), (2) Belief in Allah exclusive right to be worshipped alone (Uluhiyah) and (3) Belief in Allah exclusive right to His divine names and attributes (Al Asma Was-Sifaat).

Rububiyah – This is to believe that Allah (swt) is the only creator, provider, giver of life, taker of life, etc. That Allah (swt) is the one who manages the affair of the entire universe and all that it contains. Allah (swt) says

“And to He (swt) is the Creating and the Command” [Surah Al Araf 7:54]

Uluhiyah – This is to believe that Allah (swt) has the sole exclusive right for all our ritual acts to be directed towards Him, whether our prayers, fasting, pilgrimage or slaughtering. Allah (swt) say

“And they were commanded not, but that they should worship Allah, and worship none but Him Alone” [Surah Al Baiyinah 98:5]

Asma was Sifaat – This is affirming the Names and Attributes of Allah (swt) contained within the Islamic texts of the Qur’an and the Sunnah, which Allah (swt) has confirmed upon Himself. Secondly it is negating and rejecting any comparison between Allah (swt) and His creation. Allah (swt) says

“Nothing is like Him (swt) and He is the All-Seeing and the All-Hearing.” [EMQ Ash Shura 42:11]

Tawheed is the cause for a person who believes in it to enter paradise and the cause for the one who rejects it to enter the hellfire.

Tawheed is the condition for our acts to be accepted by Allah. Any action void of Tawheed will be rejected.
The consequence of the one who has Tawheed is that he will receive the mercy of Allah (swt).
