Ashura falls on the 16th of this month InshaAllah.
9th Muharram: 15th December
10th Muharram: 16th December
11th Muharram: 17th December
Fasting on either of those days expiates the sins of the past year as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Fasting the day of Arafah I hope Allah will expiate thereby for the year before it and the year after it, and fasting the day of Ashura. I hope Allaah will expiate thereby for the year that came before it (Sahih Muslim). As Muslims, we are encouraged to fast on two of those days as opposed to just the tenth, as part of the recommendation to be different from the Jews who also consider this a holy day in their calender. The ninth and tenth is recommended to distinguish us from the practice of the Jews. To go a step further, we are recommended to fast either the 9th and 10th or 10 and 11th, so basically an extra day along with Ashura.
Allah give us the taufeeq to seek His pleasure and forgiveness in every step we take.
