    Some Misconceptions and Baseless Traditions
There are many wrong traditions associated with the Day of Aashooraa and Muharram, which have nothing to do with the Shariah. We have to guard ourselves from falling into these wrong traditions and bidah because this is also sin.

    1) Some other people attribute the sanctity of Aashooraa to the martyrdom of Husain, RA. No doubt, the story of Husain, RA is one of the most tragic episodes of our history. Yet, the sanctity of Ashura cannot be ascribed to this event for the simple reason that the sanctity of Ashura was established during the days of the Prophet (pbuh) , much earlier than the birth of his grandson Husain.

    2) Some people consider Muharram an evil or unlucky month, for Husain, RA was killed in it. So they dont hold weddings, and other celebrations during this month. This is again a baseless concept, which is contrary to the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah.

Having superstitions, such as this, is committing a kind of shirk since one associates a particular event or person with having power to harm or do good and only Allaah is the One Who has power over all things.

3)Some people think it is Sunnah to prepare a particular type of meal on the 10th, and they hold big gatherings for this purpose. This, again has no basis in the Shareeah.

    4) Some people mourn and lament over the death of Hussain RA and hold special ceremonies for this very purpose.

However, the Prophet (pbuh) has forbidden us from holding mourning ceremonies on the death of any person, which was the practice of the people of jahiliyyah (ignorance).

"He is not from our group who slaps his checks, tears his clothes and cries in the manner of the people of jahiliyyah." (Bukhaari)

And if you really think about it, it is the greatest merit and reward that Hussain RA received, when he attained martyrdom for the sake of Allaah.

    5) Some people go to the other extreme and dress up and cook special dishes, etc. as a kind of celebration for this Day and that is ALSO against the Quraan and Sunnah.

    6) Others hold special prayers or offer sacrifice or visit the graves, specifically on the 10th of Muharram, thinking that there is special reward or meaning for doing so in the Shareeah and this is also a kind of bidah that one should stay away from.

    Alhamdulilah...for everything

These "misconceptions" are totally one-sided, and I can never respect or appreciate anything that imposes merely one side of history. What's worse, no evidence is provided for the "It's against the Quran and Sunnah" parts of each point. Uh, which Quranic verse? I'm over 100% sure it won't be found in the Quran, so lemme ask ... which hadiths?

I do acknowledge it, however, as the beliefs of a large group of Muslims, and just as I have the right to disagree with what's said above and reject it, they have the right TO agree with it and accept it as facts.

That said, here's a big misconception I was told of about 2 weeks ago. It's been haunting me ever since I heard it.

In Swat (I am SURE it's in other areas as well, but I speak only of Swat because I have evidence), many parents keep their children protected at home and warn them that if they leave the house, they will be killed by Shiites. It is claimed that Shiites take Sunni children on the Sacred day of Muharram, butcher them, and make their "Muharram rice" (called "khutkanai" in Pashto; details to come) with the blood of those Sunni children instead of with water!

Take THAT for a "misconception," world :S How ridiculous and evil is that!

Okay, so in Swat, what we do on Muharram Day -- called "Asaan" in Pashto, coming from Hasan and Hussain = Hasnain = Hasaan = Asaan, the Pashtunized version -- is this: Young girls gather in their maternal house (sometimes in paternal house, if not enough females in maternal house, though) to cook what we call khutkanai. It's rice made on a special day and only by these young girls, with no help from the elders, we give it this special name. When it's made, the girls take them to their families and eat them together.

It's such a pleasant and joyous occasion for many, and we always looked forward to it. This is one of the best things I miss the most! I asked a cousin of mine if this still happens, and she said not really; even when it does take place, it's not done with as much enthusiasm as it was before.

Does anyone know what I'm talking about? Swatis?

      You missed one my dear,
      7) Some people vigorously try to find and spread hatred material against other Muslims during Muharram, thinking they will receive some kind of special rewards or christmas discount coupons afterwards. Again, this is ALSO against Quran and Sunnah.
      Just kidding, keep posting.

      4) Some people mourn and lament over the death of Hussain RA and hold special ceremonies for this very purpose.

However, the Prophet (pbuh) has forbidden us from holding mourning ceremonies on the death of any person, which was the practice of the people of jahiliyyah (ignorance).
But I wonder who wrote this material. Whoever it is, looks like they didn't study enough.

      Abbas narrates:

"I heard Ayesha saying "The Messenger of God died on my bosom during my turn, I did not wrong anyone in regard to him. It was because of my ignorance and youthfulness that the Messenger of God died while he was in my lap. Then I laid his head on a pillow and got up beating my chest and slapping my face along with the women".
Bidayah wa al Nihayah, Volume 5, page 420
Sirah Ibn Ishaq, page 713 (declared 'Hasan')
Sirah Ibn Hisham, Volume 4 page 655

This is just to show you that what you posted is nothing more than an opinion of an online sheikh; it shouldn't be taken too seriously, or as concrete facts. The point is that the author doesn't give any evidence of his/her claims. What was the basis of on which the claims were made? On what principle did the author chose to ignore the 1000s of narrations that refute the author's claim, etc, etc.
I mean, before posting something, one should check the credibility of the author. This could greatly help reduce the spread of "misconceptions", if that's what you are trying to do.

Here's a good read about the horrors of the deviants in Muharram:

here is a hadith from sahih bukhari,

        (18) Narrated Um Atiyya: We gave the Pledge of allegiance to the Prophet and he recited to me the verse (60.12). That they will not associate anything in worship with Allah (60.12). And he also prevented us from wailing and lamenting over the dead. A woman from us held her hand out and said, "Such-and-such a woman cried over a dead person belonging to my family and I want to compensate her for that
crying" The Prophet did not say anything in reply and she left and returned. None of those women abided by her pledge except Um Sulaim, Um Al-'Ala', and the daughter of Abi Sabra, the wife of Al-Muadh or the daughter of Abi Sabra, and the wife of Mu'adh. (Book #89, Hadith #322)

Yet, the sanctity of Ashura cannot be ascribed to this event for the simple reason that the sanctity of Ashura was established during the days of the Prophet (pbuh) , much earlier than the birth of his grandson Husain.

          hadith for this is,
'A'isha (Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) had ordered to observe fast (on 'ashura) before the fasting in Ramadan was made obligatory. But when it became obligatory, then he who wished fasted on the day of ashura, and he who wished did not observe it (on that day). (Book #006, Hadith #2502)

          2) Some people consider Muharram an evil or unlucky month, for Husain, RA was killed in it. So they dont hold weddings, and other celebrations during this month. This is again a baseless concept, which is contrary to the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah.

They do not hold weddings and i someone does they have to have it in secret. There is no hadith that says Dont hold wedding in muharram.

3)Some people think it is Sunnah to prepare a particular type of meal on the 10th, and they hold big gatherings for this purpose. This, again has no basis in the Shareeah.

          does it?

          4) Some people mourn and lament over the death of Hussain RA and hold special ceremonies for this very purpose.

However, the Prophet (pbuh) has forbidden us from holding mourning ceremonies on the death of any person, which was the practice of the people of jahiliyyah (ignorance).

people go to the extent ofbeating themeselves with chains
and killing a horse.Thats not islamic...

          5) Some people go to the other extreme and dress up and cook special dishes, etc. as a kind of celebration for this Day and that is ALSO against the Quraan and Sunnah.
This is related to number 3.
and also because some people might associate it with Hazrat Hussains (Ra) Martydom. Where i have seen myself people offering khairat in Hazrat Hussains name which is shirk.

          6) Others hold special prayers or offer sacrifice or visit the graves, specifically on the 10th of Muharram, thinking that there is special reward or meaning for doing so in the Shareeah and this is also a kind of bidah that one should stay away from.

This again is related to the other points above.

I'm not forcing nor can I force my beliefs on anyone. Nor am I here to backlash at shia's.
          Alhamdulilah...for everything
