What happened to afghanistan could not have been avoided by any leader. When the americans tricked the russians into invading afghanistan(revenge for vietnam) and then pumped billions in money and other support into a devided majahadeen through pakistans ISI which sole pupose was to destroy afghanistan. It was american money, power, and manipulation that brought the russians, ISI and the arabs to afghanistan. What could the pashtun have done to avoid this, one thing comes to my mind and that would have been for daud khan to allow an american military base back inthe 70's, but at the time he was more concerned with "pashtunistan". otherwise you tell me what should have they done.

Who would be responsible for that, the Pakistanis or the Americans.
