Swati women want army to stay

ISLAMABAD, Feb 4: Womenfolk in the Swat valley are still haunted by the Taliban rule and they want the Pakistan Army to stay unless full peace and prosperity returned to the area.

“Once the Army is withdrawn, things will start to deteriorate” – is the feeling of a common Swati woman, concludes Dr Anita Weiss, a researcher from the United States while delivering a talk on: “Crisis and reconciliation in Swat through the eyes of women” at the National Commission on the Status of Women, in Islamabad on Thursday.

Dr Weiss, head of the Department of International Studies at the University of Oregon, toured the Swat valley and held in-depth discussions with the Swati women, and concluded that they [Swati women] also want the government to take bold steps for the revival of rural economy of the valley so that they can earn livelihood and raise their families.

The women of Swat would prefer job opportunities to earn money to buy food rather than donated food, she said.

Dr Weiss stated that despite traumatic experience, the morale of women especially young girls was quite high, and they want to carry out studies to become useful citizens of the country. Swati girls when asked about their careers, desire to fly aircraft, she said.

Among the girls, there is a renewed commitment for education and spirit to fight back the Talibanization. They also want the civil society to form women cooperatives and groups to assist them in setting up business and accessing the markets, she said.

Dr Weiss’s talk was well-attended by people from the civil society. The Chairperson of the Commission on the Status of Women, Ms Anis Haroon welcomed Dr Weiss, who is also a member of the Research Advisory Board of the Commission. Currently, she was working on a research project on the issue of interpreting Islam, modernity and women’s rights in Pakistan.

    Wednesday, April 21, 2010

    By Said Nazir Afridi

BARA: Following the apology tendered by the Chief of the Army Staff, Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, to Kukikhel tribe on the killing of civilians in air strikes in Sra Vella area of Tirah Valley, Khyber Agency, on April 10, the Pakistan Army announced compensation of Rs 20 million for the victims.

“We never expected that Pakistan Army will admit its mistake and apologise for the killing of innocent people in Sra Vella,” said a tribesman from Jamrud, Nafees Khan, while talking to The News.

He said the majority of Kukikhel tribe was happy with Kayani, who admitted that innocent people had been killed in Sra Vella. “The apology and compensation announced by the Army chief for Sra Vella victims healed the wounds of Kukikhel tribe,” Malik Wazir said and added that Kukikhels, like the past, would continue their support to the Pakistan Army in future and sacrifice for the defense of the country.

While talking to this scribe, the Political Agent (PA) of Khyber Agency, Shafeerullah Khan, said the military would pay Rs 200,000 each to 61 dead and Rs 100,000 each to 21 injured of Sra Vella air strikes within two days. He said that Pakistan Army would bear the cost of treatment of the Sra Vella injured admitted in Peshawar hospitals.
“The federal government would pay a separate compensation package to the victims of Sra Vella in near future,” the official said.

On behalf of Chief of the Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Brig Basit and Brig Arshad visited the ICRC Hospital in Peshawar where they inquired about the health of seven injured of Sra Vella and paid them Rs 100,000 each. They also paid Rs 200,000 to heirs of two dead each.

According to the ISPR, the Pakistan Army has granted Rs 20 million compensation for the victims of Sra Vella. The six-member scrutiny committee, made by Kukikhel grand Jirga, would visit the FC Camp at Shakas today to receive the announced compensation by the Army. Two Pakistani jet fighters attacked the house of late Hameed Khan in Sra Vella area on April 10 in which 61 people were killed.

The reason why Kukikhel are happy with the Pakistani army is because Kuki Khel, Kumbar Khel Sepah and other Afridi tribes are involved in a age old feud which is now faught along the trenches of Taliban and Pakistani Army.

I know more about Afridi inter-tribal feuds. So please. Cut the crap.

Afghan army are known for gang-raping little children. There were many incidents of rape all across Afghanistan commited by Afghan army.

They gang-raped little children in front of their Kaafir Canadian and American pay-masters. They did things so horrible that the Canadian soldiers were severely traumatized because they saw a boy who's intestines were pulled out of his rectum after violent sex by Afghan National Army soldiers.
Whats your suggestions? What should we do? You are talking like all Afghan army is raping people? The fact is the Afghan army is getting better and better day by day and it together with Karzai government is the best option for Afghanistan at the moment. These kind of story will take place in a country like Afghanistan because we still lack stability - but that stability will not come with your attitude.

              Keep Islam out of it.

Army must destroy Taliban, jirga declares

ISLAMABAD: Hundreds of tribesmen from regions near the Pak-Afghan border ended a rare tribal council on Saturday with a declaration calling for the army to crush the Taliban.

The meeting in Peshawar was called by an umbrella group of aid organisations and political parties in an effort to bring together people from the region.

Participants called for the army to escalate attacks against the Taliban across the tribal regions, dismissing Pakistan’s earlier offensives as “military dramas”.

“It should be a genuine military operation like the Sri Lankans did against the Tamil Tigers,” said Sayd Alam Mehsud, a powerful tribal leader, referring to the brutal military campaign that destroyed the separatist Tamil army in Sri Lanka.

They also called for more power for traditional councils.

“If we strengthen these councils and make them more functional, I believe it will win us half of the war,” said one participant, Salar Amjad Ali, 34. “We, the Pashtuns, live for our culture and tradition and we die for it,” he added.

While Saturday’s meeting was not a formal jirga, it is rare to have so many tribal leaders gather together.

A declaration at the end of the meeting called democracy vital to rooting out terrorism, arguing that the military should keep out of politics.

“A sapling of terrorism cannot grow in democracy. Any attempt to derail democracy is like letting the terrorists walk all over us,” the declaration said.

One organiser, Sayd Alam Mehsud, said the meeting was a way to bring together people from the area that is suffering most in Islamabad’s war against the militants.

“We have just tried to unite people for the sake of peace,” he said. Participants said they had little faith in the US-Pakistan alliance, and that Washington and Islamabad were more worried about internal political issues than dealing with the deep-set social issues at the root of much of the violence.

“If we do not address the mindset of the terrorists, we will not be able to eliminate terrorists,” said Alam.

Crush the unwilling: The tribal leaders urged the government in Pakistan to reach out to the militants - but also to crush those unwilling to negotiate.

“We tribesmen are more patriotic than anybody else,” said one participant, Din Muhammad Khan, who had come South Waziristan, where a government offensive that began last fall is thought to have killed hundreds of terrorists.

“Pakistan is ours. We are for Pakistan... we will die for this country if required,”
he said. Meanwhile, in Karachi, police arrested three Taliban militants on Saturday and seized a bomb-making factory, a counter-terrorism official said.

Police raided a house in the city’s industrial area and forced the militants to surrender after a gunbattle, said Raja Omar Khatab, No one was injured.

After their arrest, the suspects led police elsewhere to the bomb factory, and a large number of explosives, detonators and other bomb-making material was seized, he said.

Violence has surged in Pakistan in recent days as terrorists - thought to be part of a loose network of insurgents fighting the US-allied Islamabad government - launched a wave of suicide bombings. ap

Don't play games here. I am not calling anyone's sister a prostitute.

Those articles you post omit facts.

In Swat are many hotels where at night female dancers appear to entertain the tourists. And prostitution is widespread in the night-life of Mingawara.

Most of the dirty Pashto video's of dancing prostitutes to the songs of Nazia Iqbal are shot In Swat. Because of the pretty landscape.

That does not mean all Swatis are prostitutes.

Kabul city is also filled with brothels and sex-party bars. THat does not mean all people from Kabul are prostitutes.

So don't try to put words in my mouth.
