I'm surprised that people support Najibullah on Pashtun Forums. Perhaps we're all not as Pashtun as we think we are, eh?

Although he himself was Pashtun, Najibullah was a pro-Soviet stooge and member of Khad.

Were these qualities beneficial. Was the Soviet occupation beneficial for Afghanistan? I'd say no.

But you might argue that Najibullah decided that since the Soviets were there and everything was destroyed anyway by the war, it would be better to have the Soviets rebuild it than the Mujahideen.

          Which way do you sway?

He was a no good thug whose only good quality was his ability at making good sounding speeches but the man's actions show what he was no good

            Bio of Dr. Najibullah Ahmadzai

Najibullah led the communist government in Kabul during its last years when it was under siege. He came to symbolize its character more than the previous leader, Karmal. Huge, cunning, ruthless, and pragmatic, Najibullah played out a losing hand with skill and determination.
Najibullah attended the University of Kabul in the late 1960s with Masud, Hekmatyar, and many other important players in Afghanistan. Even in Afghanistan it was a time of student activism with the school split between Islamists and communists. Najibullah chose communism because it promised to improve the status of women and free the peasants from the oppression of the Khans. He killed another student during a political argument and had to flee to Iran. But he returned to finish his education and graduated a medical doctor in 1975.
Najibullah never practiced medicine, instead he joined KhAD, the secret police organized by the Soviets. KhAD arrested and tortured thousands of people. As leader of KhAD, Najibullah became the most hated man in Afghanistan. His enemies nicknamed him “Najib-e Gaw” or “Najib the Bull” because of his weight-lifter’s physique. Despite, or perhaps because of his reputation, the Soviets saw fit to make him head of state in 1986. They withdrew their troops in 1989, leaving him in charge.
Najibullah surprised the world by defending Kabul from the mujahideen for another three years. He tried to bring a peaceful reconciliation between the government and the rebels, but this was rejected. The end came when Dostum betrayed him and joined Masud. Najibullah raced to catch a plane for Moscow, but found his way blocked, so he and his brother fled to the United Nations compound in Kabul. Four boring years Najibullah spent in the compound, occasionally visited by Masud’s intelligence chief, Fahim, who came looking for information.
Perhaps Najibullah deserved a bad death as much as any man in the country, but his end was still horrifying. In 1996, Mullah Omar captured Kabul. The Taliban broke into the UN compound and dragged Najibullah out into the street. They beat, hanged, and shot him, leaving his swaying battered corpse in the street, a sacrifice to the victims of KhAD.

Before saying something negative about him you all should first understand who he was, what he did and what he predicted of afghanistan. The current state of afghanistan was predicted by him long time ago... i can even find you the video on youtube... he says it clearly that if i leave, arabs will come here, pakistanis will come here... soviets have left.. lets work together, lets put our arms down and work for the betterment of this country... lets be united... he was addressing this speech to mujahideen and he said , if you want this chair this government, it is yours, i will leave it to you but i am sure you will see you will have arabs and pakistanis ruling you and ruling afghan milllat...

He was a member of Khad... Afghanistan's intelligence agency, and what all he did was required by his job and i am not saying all of that was positive, but as a politician his goal was to work for afghans and afghanistan. he could have run away from afghanistan if he wanted to and no one could ever reach him and harm him... many countries had offered him exile but he DIDN'T... he stayed there in afghanistan till he took his last breath...

the dirty pakistani ISI killed him to further their own agenda in Afghanistan... if he was a criminal or he was a saint an outsider had no right to kill him.

my own cousins were standing witnessing this and they told me that all of this dirty people that hanged him were speaking Urdu saying "chalo chalo hato, peechay hojao" they were all panjabis along side sold out pashtoons!

Even though Hekmatyar was a Pukhtoon, yet he very bravely was in slavery for foreigners. Even though one eyed donkey Mullah Omar is a Pukhtoon, yet he will not give up on his loyalty to ISI. Even though Karzai is a Pukhtoon, yet he will not give up on his loyalty to 40+ NATO states. Surprised? Don't be!

Eh, dude, by the time Najibullah was in 'charge', Soviet army was already gone and nor did they intend to come back......

Or the fact that Najibullah knew exactly which forty countries will rule Afghanistan, if not communism? Or the fact that he was the only one who didn't escape the Taliban till his dead. Orrrrr, the fact he was the only leader since past three decades who did not invite any foreign army/soldiers/terrorists to the country? Reasons enough?

Next time before putting an article in order to ridicule anyone at all, at least look at the index of the article and decide for yourself how trustworthy the link actually is. Thanks for the favor.

I don't know whether they were Punjabis or not, but even my relatives had witnessed it. It's just sad that those who speak against him don't realize that if he indeed was enemy of Afghanistan then why would the Pakistani government, number one enemy of Afghanistan in history, remove him from power? I thought enmity meant destroying your enemy, not saving them from disaster?

I'm pretty sure the Muslims really hated him back when he was in power. Now that history has proven how intelligent of a man he was, you have all jumped on the ban-wagon.

the guy was a murderer plain and simple, there are no two ways about it. His men burned people alive in every village they went to while he was in ghad.

he was a thug and a cold blooded murderer like gulbai, rabbani, masoud and the rest of them

i for once was happy he was killed, and i don't care who did it could have been the Martians for i care

^The Pashtun vision is only in hindsight 20/20.

That is why as a people we have failed. I am pretty sure that the solutions to our problems are evident but we don't have the intellectual capacity to see them. We will go "ahhh" after it hits us like a brick, but then it will be too late, yet again.
