PESHAWAR: Suspected militants attacked army buildings near the US consulate in Pakistan's northwestern capital Peshawar on Saturday, police said.

Police said a number of armed fighters tried to get into a secure area close to the consulate and army buildings early in the morning and that exchanges of fire between the attackers and security forces were continuing.

“There target is not clear but they were trying to reach a very sensitive area. There is the US consulate and army offices and buildings in that area,” Karim Khan, a senior police official in Peshawar, told AFP.

“The US consulate is completely safe,” he added.

Richard Snelsire, a spokesman for the US Embassy in Islamabad, told AFP he had “no information right now” on whether the consulate was the intended target.

Police said the army had sealed off the site of the attack, preventing anyone from entering, while intermittent gunfire continued.

An AFP reporter at the scene said army and police had blocked all the roads into the area while helicopters patrolled the skies.

Bashir Bilour, a provincial cabinet minister whose home is in front of the consulate, said: “The first round of firing continued for 30 minutes. I don't know what's going on but the army has sealed off the whole area and firing is still continuing.” “Soldiers have also entered my Hujra (Visitors compound). I cannot go outside,” he added. – AFP

Someone can't just take them (other than probably US who might step in, but even then it is highly unlikely). Most probably if that country does collapse...the nukes will be in the hands of Panjab. Militants are the creation of mostly their intel agencies so its not as if they are this competent nor will the army let them take it. It is like Selig Harrison most probably it will end up being a nuclear armed Panjab rump state.

Pakistan is irresponsible this is known...but US can probably do a lot things, but would they want to is the question? The US pakistan relationship runs deep and messy. If anything they are cozy with the military than civilian government.

US can have Pakistan and other developed nations in crumbles without any damage occuring to the USA. Since USA is well-defended with planes on guard 24/7. Its not called a Super power for no reason.

Pakistan is literally an American slave just like all other countries across the world. Without the USA who will Pakistan get chandaah from?
Peera the implication of Pakistan's dmise has regional implications (not that I like Pakistan)..one being is that it will end up with the creation of new states and boundaries (Pashtuns most probably will eventually unite, Baloch with a new semi state, Sindh with their own, etc)...it also puts regional neighbours in an initial shock since they won't know how to deal with it. It isn't a simple issue of military firepower...if that worked the Israeli intervention of the 70s, Vietnam, Pakistans own civil war, etc outcomes would have been different.
