    Afghanistan Recruits Iraq-style Militia Force

KABUL - The Afghan government said Wednesday it had began recruiting thousands of militiamen to strengthen security forces against a resurgent Taliban in remote villages of the war-torn country.

President Hamid Karzai last month approved the establishment of what his administration calls "Local Police Force" -- recruited from among Afghan villagers in a bid to guard against Taliban attacks in their communities.

Deputy interior minister Mohammad Munir Mangal told reporters that the US-backed initiative was underway in south-central provinces Wardak and Uruzgan, both hard hit by Taliban violence.

Once fully in theatre, the force will number about 10,000 men, Mangal said.

Mangal said the recruits would operate under the interior ministry, which has authority over all Afghan police. They will be paid about 60 percent of the regular police salary, he added.

Karzai and the commander of foreign forces in the country, US General David Petraeus, met for days before reaching an agreement over creating the new force, according to Afghan officials.

US media have reported that Petraeus, who took command of nearly 150,000 US and NATO troops on July 4, had been pushing for the establishment of Iraq-style tribal militias to fight Taliban-linked militants in remote Afghan villages.

Critics are concerned about repeating mistakes made in Afghanistan during the 1980s, when local militias were set up during the Soviet occupation to fight the mujahideen uprising, and then morphed into private armies.

I think Pashtuns will also part of this Police force since recruitment will be from Grass root level.. Is there any Policy regarding pashtuns not to be part of local police force by afghan govt?

The program is by and largely undergoing in Pashtun areas since that is where the Taliban concentration is. So expect this new force to be more tribaly composed and mainly in southern Afghanistan, I believe.

This is like Afghanistan going backwards into the past, to the time when Europe, America and Australia had localized police forces, which of course failed to combat crime. Good luck for them spending the money, at least it will feed some poor families with no jobs for a while.

There is a very simple solution.

Press the UN to place sanctions on the ISI and Pakistan Army.

Wallah! Taliban from Afghanistan will no longer have any resources or power to cross over and into Afghanistan to fight Afghan government.

The problem lies in Pakistan ISI and Army. There are elements within the ISI who still support Taliban. Its not rocket science! take a look at Hamid guls and Col imam who at this present day praise the Taliban in Afghanistan live on TV, imgine me and you doing it, we would be arrested and tortured, but why are these guys not?

                Kind Regards

It was Afghan Taliban and guess who supervised it? Pakistan Army lol

Afghan Taliban are 100 percent relying on Pakistan for its power and support base other than that its not hard to recruit Jihadis, there are mosques full of them and they will die for a few rupees to get to heaven.

                    Kind Regards

I wasn't poking fun of you bro. What i meant was even though there is so much evidence suggesting Pakistan's involvement with the Taliban, yet America does nothing. It's because, America has his own agendas.
