  • Pakistani Taliban urge rejection of foreign flood aid

SUKKUR, Pakistan (AFP) - – Pakistan's Taliban have denounced all foreign aid for victims of the country's catastrophic flooding, and said they can match the latest US pledge of 20 million dollars.
"We condemn American and other foreign aid and believe that it will lead to subjugation. Our jihad against America will continue," a spokesman for the group, Azam Tariq, told AFP by telephone.

"The government should not accept American aid and if it happens, we can give 20 million dollars to them as aid for the flood victims," he said.
"We will ourselves distribute relief under leadership of our chief Hakimullah Mehsud among the people, if the government assures us that none of our members will be arrested."

The floods have been most devastating in the Taliban's stronghold in the northwest. Across Pakistan they have left six million people dependent on humanitarian help for their survival, the United Nations said.
The United States announced Tuesday it would increase its flood aid by another 20 million dollars to 55 million dollars, while the UN said it would launch an international appeal for several hundred million dollars.
The world body believes 1,600 people have died in the floods while the Pakistani government has confirmed 1,243 deaths.
US aid so far has included 436,000 halal meals and 12 pre-fabricated bridges, while the White House said that US helicopters had helped to save more than 1,000 lives in Pakistan.
But critics say that as the worst floods in living memory spread across Pakistan, the official relief effort has been woefully slow, and Islamic charities have been stepping into the breach.
Pakistan's Tehreek-e-Taliban faction is a key architect of extremist violence that has killed more than 3,570 people across Pakistan in three years.
However Daniel Feldman, a senior State Department official working on Afghanistan and Pakistan, on Tuesday dismissed reports of extremist groups providing aid to needy Pakistanis as "quite overblown".
Referring to US efforts to win public support in a country where anti-American feeling runs high, Ward said the US government tries to "brand as much as possible" of its aid.

"In this crisis, in the face of this disaster, we very much want the Pakistani people to know that the people of the United States are behind them, are helping," Ward said.

Beyond the northwest, about 1.5 million people have been evacuated in the south and a large swathe of fertile farmland has been destroyed in the central province of Punjab.

Parts of the northwestern Swat valley, where Pakistan fought a major campaign to flush out Taliban insurgents last year, were still cut off Tuesday by road, as were parts of the country's breadbasket in Punjab and Sindh.

But weather cleared Tuesday, allowing Pakistani, US and Afghan helicopters to distribute relief items and rescue people stranded in the northwest. Focus: US pilots fly Pakistan flood aid to win hearts
UN officials said aid would focus on six million people who need emergency help to survive, while 14 million in all are said by Pakistani authorities to be facing direct or indirect harm.

The UN has warned that children are among the most vulnerable victims, with diarrhoea the biggest health threat and measles a serious concern.
At the Ali Wahan relief camp about 20 kilometres (13 miles) east of Sukkur in Sindh province, there were barely a dozen flood survivors and a clinic with limited stocks of basic medicine.

"There are no facilities for families to live in this camp. My husband has gone to arrange some transport and we'll leave," said Mai Jannat, 35.
Doctor Nazir Ahmed at the camp said patients were suffering from gastroenteritis, stomach and eye diseases.

President Asif Ali Zardari is now back home after courting massive criticism for not cutting short a visit to Britain and France, although it was unclear if he would visit flood-hit areas.

    Taliban are absolutely right.

The money will eventually end up in the pocket of corrupt ANP leaders who will spend the money on Nazia Iqbal & Ismail Shahid concerts and college fees for their spoiled children who live in America and flood Pashtunforums on daily bases with their secularist filth.

Foreign aid is "helping" us in Afghanistan for the past 9 years. We have today more people suffering from poverty and famine than before.

Africa is being helped by foreign aid for the past 50 years. More people are dying there than ever before.

THERE IS NO SUCH A THING AS A FREE LUNCH.

Nobody would help us. Even America is aiding Pashtunkhwa at this moment only because they want to improve their image there after the drone strikes that have killed thousands of innocent civilians.

We don't need politically laden help. We need genuine and sincere help witout twists and flip sides. We need people to help us. Not some institution who wants to mess things up even more.

Look at the aid of 2005 earth quakes. Where did all the money go? At the end of day, the people most heavily struck by the disaster didn't receive a fraction of the aid.

We need to realize that foreign aid is not solving our problems. We need people to help themselves. Everyone should aid their own relatives. The help must come from our own community.

People won't sell their expensive 2010 model car and buy an old second hand car because they like their new car too much. But they send 5 Euro's to Pakistan to help the poor. The very same people complain why the international community is not sending billions.

You have received billions in aid in the past 9 years. The ammount of money flowing into Afghanistan in the past 9 years was enough to build Afghanistan into a Switzerland of Asia.

But today, if you leave Kabul driving east towards our district, we don't have basic necessities such as clinics, elementary schools, medication, transportation and electricity. And we live within the provincial limits of Kabul province.

So what happened to the aid we are "depending on"? What institutions have htey built for the over 100.000 people in our district?

Even the road that is about 10 kilometres long connecting our village to the main provincial road wasn't built by "the institutions". It was paid by our own villages.

And don't even ask of what's beyond our village. The further you go south from where I am from, the less you see. No institutions to be found there, I tell ya.

It is very sad and true that only a fraction of that aid reach to affectees, as we have seen in 2005 eathquake. Sangar has aptly written about the cons of such aid but our as a third world country do not have much resources to help these people. Regarding TTP and their help towards affectees seem a publicity stunt only. TTP till now taking money from people with posing threats to their lives. The pros of such an aid go positive to over all economy even if corruption occur. Its free injected money, which in a way lead to demand and hence induce entrepreneurs to make sure supply in the market with employing more resources including labors. In nutshell it brings positive multiplier effects in the economy and negate any anti aid view. By generating opportunities to affected people mean reducing of social problems realting to poverty. So this aid money solve your problems at domestic level. Regarding political strings attached with such humanitarian aid, it is state policy makers who guage every move with its short and long term consequences and its turning into opportunity and interests. Accepting humanitarian aid do not compel one to sell country's interests. Its up to the people that how they utilize it to their best interests.

Nopes, entire Afghanistan combined is not even half as a cheat like the foreigners in Afghanistan. If an Afghan commits fraud then at most he will 'snatch' one million Dollar a year, that's it. While a foreigner, without any trouble, can commit a fraud of up to one million Dollar a month. Do you really think all those Americans 'helping' in Afghanistan have gone nuts to waste their time and money on Afghanistan? Ehh, sorry to disappoint you, but no they haven't. In USA they earn in thousands after hard work, in Afghanistan they earn in millions by simply committing fraud. Afghanistan isn't corrupt just because of our politicians, Westerners play a way bigger role in that. If it were our people only who were so corrupt then like in some neighboring countries, we would be compelled to pay reshwat at every airport, at every police station, every time we are being stopped and you name it! And all these things, simply don't happen in major parts in the country.
