    Pathan claiming to be Afghan refugees

    National Database & Registration Authority ( NADRA) of Pakistan stated today before a Pakistani Parliamentary Committee that there are around one million Pakistani citizen faked registered as Afghan refugees to get benefits from UN. Cashing in name of Afghans again.

    چې ننګ په وطن وکړئ داسي ځوان وزېږوه
    نويا خو خوشحال خان يا بادشا خان وزېږوه

    چې جوړه کړي انګريز ته بيا غزا د ارنوۍ
    يو داسې لوی غازي ميرزمان خان وزيږوه

    اوس راشه په شعرنو کي طوفان وزيږو

The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

        And 1.45million most of which is claimed as Afghans living in Pakestan.

        It would be an interesting Venn diagram to see who is who (documentation vs ethnicity)

            How do you know they are all or even mostly “Pathan.” I don’t doubt there are some beghairat Pakistani Pashtuns doing this but Punjabis have a track record of pretending to be Afghan to get benefits(remember the case of Punjabis from Gujrat pretending to be Afghan to get asylum in Europe?) so a lot or even most of these fake Afghan refugees probably come from Punjab.

              I wouldn’t blame this on Punjabi’s. It’s far more reasonable for these folks to be Pashtuns of Pakistan since they know they can get away with it. After all, we are the same ethnicity, and it is non-trivial to determine where a Pashtun is located from. For example, someone from Peshawar can not tell the difference between a Pashtun of Quetta vs a Pashtun of Kandahar.

                When I wrote the comment I was imagining a situation where Afghan refugee status is given anyone who files for it with no background check. But if there is some oversight in refugee registration then you are right that Pakistani Pashtuns would have a much easier time getting away with claiming to be Afghan refugees. I know from experience that non-Pashtun Pakistanis can’t tell the difference between Pakistani and Afghan Pashtuns so if the people dealing with people claiming to be refugees are non-Pashtuns then they will probably be fooled by Pakistani Pashtuns claiming to be refugees.

                  That is actually nothing new. I've seen a couple of Pakistanis with a thick south asian accent pretending being Afghan. They received asylum here with an afghan passport in the 90s and early 2000s.
