The reason iranic or Iranian is used for all types of people by orientalist and western historians is because persia is all they knew. Also because persia had invaded and annexed lands so they consider them part of iranic people because they were subdued by Persia. The languages were also considered iranic or sub languages of Persia because it were Persian empire domain. Parts of Afghanistan was also under Persia but that doesn't make people their sub group.

Maybe you have a soft spot for Iran and the iranic term but it is a fabrication. Persia just had more technology at the time and also more media so they promoted their rhetoric.
Why not call Iranian western Afghan people?

Pakistan only exist 60 years and north western parts are contested areas and we haven't accepted it as part of Pakistan. It's Afghans that's why we share cultural similarities. With people past Indus river we don't share anything but we did have alot of influence over their culture and language.

The reason Pashtuns and Tajiks are so similar is because we have fused together by being Sunni Muslims and hanafi. Afghanyat is something also shared by other ethnicities.
Tajiks from Afghanistan actually have their language and culture preserved compared to Tajikistan. The same goes for Uzbeks turkmans etc.

Persians has alwasy been ruled over...for past 1000 years by Turkish/Azari and even Kashmiri Khoyamni. It was only 1932 when Persia change her name to Iran. The term Iranic does not mean assoicated with Persia(Ever since 1932 Iran) it simply cultural/language grouping...just like the term Germanic.

Iran derives from Arya/Aryan, which all of us have used to describe ourselves and our languages. Afghan has only ever been used to describe Pashtuns and Tajiks.

I don’t necessarily agree with the term “Iranic,” but it makes more sense than Afghan at least. It’s not a big deal anyway. If you don’t like that Iranian culture is associated with Aryan/Iranic peoples, we should challenge that by pushing our own cultures as being equal representatives, not by complaining about the name used in English-speaking anthropological circles.

        no disrespect, though. lol

Only Indics are pushing hard for Afghanistan to identify itself as South Asian. Hardly anyone in Afghanistan would identify in anyway related to South Asia.

Is Afghanistan Middle Eastern? When you think of Middle East what comes to mind is = hot dry weather, deserts, flat lands, palm trees, camels, bunch of crazy Arabs, oil, etc.

Central Asian label is the most fitting even though it's associated with the Ex-soviet Stans.

South Central Asian label is unnecesary.

Afghanistan have ties to its surrounding countries though. But as a whole, I really struggle to identify as part of any region. Westerners label us ''Middle Eastern'' because they think all Muslims are Arabs and speak Arabic. Some Indics want to label it ''South Asian'' because the Hindu nationalists are wetting their pants over this ''Greater India'' nonsense. these guys really think Iranic speaking dudes were walking around in the mountains of Afghanistan half naked with dots on their heads before arrival of Islam. lol
No matter all the bragging about their sophistication, most of Westerners are intellectually lazy people.

BTW I dislike all these Westerncentric labels: "Middle East", "Far East", etc. We should try to stop using them. We are not periphery. We have been center since the inception of human civilization. The effects of the Great Divergence, an historical accident, are coming to an end.

You make absolutely no sense. You dont even have basic grasp of history, sociology or politics. Your world revolves around fairy tails, conspiracy theories and emotional beliefs. Sorry I can not take you seriously. You should try doing some introspection and embracing reason and logic.

I don't care what you take serious.
All I know is you and your arguments are irrelevant.
You think too highly of yourself but in reality you are just suffering from inferiority complex.

First off, Afghanistan is not increasingly becoming a part of South Asia. Its actually the other way around. The Indification of Afghanistan has been stopped and actually has been reverted to a huge degree. Before the arrival of USA, Afghanistan relied on Pakistan for everything. Nowadays thats over. Nor Pakistan neither India are our major trade partners (Iran became first a year ago). Afghans were addicted to Indian food, movies and clothes. Now they dont are much. Actually they even hate it to a degree and most of urban Afghans instead watching Bollywood movies have shifted to Indian and Turkish dramas. Even the regional projects that Afg is right now involved in are with Central Asian and ME countries. So we are not tied to SA at all.

Secondly this article is kinda pro-Pakistani. I mean only a m*ron could consider that the current Pakistani dependency on China is something positive. China is a way more dangerous, greedy and untrustworthy ally than the USA. CPEC is a fraud that will harm Pakistan badly. We should stay away.

So no our future does not lie in South Asia. We dont want to have nothing to do with South Asians (no offense to our Muslim brothers in there, but not matter religion we are not the same except for the Iranic people living in Western Pakistan). Desis should stop claiming our country as their own.
God it's been ages since I have been on this forum.

The way I see it is that Afghans are middle eastern/central Asian people that could be classed as south Asia Because of politics and in some way, culture. The reason I say culture is because a lot of indian culture was originally brought a long because of people from Afghanistan/persia/central Asia, even in Pakistan people not even from the pashtun/gilgit areas are starting to wear the so called "afghan hat" to make them look like they can relate to us. I have even heard a few Punjabi try to claim that as their tradition. I also have no worries calling our culture a mix of central, southern and western Asia, because at the end of the day it is, however the reason we're so mixed culturally is because many people from surrounding areas have implemented our ideas. I have been Paki bashing in this forum a lot but when I look back at it I find it quite stupid.

ANd do you have a link about that term?

I ask, because i find it interesting that indians(kashmiri is indian) have conquered lands outside the subcontinent and specially Iran
