  • US blunder in Afghanistan ‘not giving representation to the Pashtuns’, Musharraf

WASHINGTON (Pajhwok): The United States committed a blunder in post 9/11 Afghanistan ‘by not giving enough representation to the majority Pashtuns’, former Pakistani military ruler Pervez Musharraf alleged Thursday.

Musharraf told a Washington audience the mistake resulted in resurgence and re-emergence of Taliban and Al Qaeda, which is responsible for the current situation in Afghanistan.

“After 9/11 the Taliban and Al Qaeda were defeated in Afghanistan. This was military victory. This military victory was to be converted into a political one,” he said in his key note address to a conference on Pakistan organized by the School of Advanced International Studies of the Johns Hopkins University.

There are 10 Pashto channels in Afghanistan, only 7 in Pakistan, despite Pakistan having more Pashto speakers. ZING!

Also, as economist Kaushik Basu says: "For a nation to progress it is important for people to spend time on science, mathematics and literature instead of spending time showing that 5,000 years ago their ancestors did science, mathematics and literature."

In all seriousness, the underrepresentation of Pakistani Pashtuns in Pashto media is a problem. It's main cause is lack of Pashto education in Pakistan;Pakistani pashtuns basically don't have as much oppurtunity to get proper training in Pashto journalism and media. Pakistani Pashtuns getting more representation in Pashto media will lead to better connections between both sides of the Durand Line an could even improve Af-Pak.

The Afghan Taliban suffered a big blow when the Western forces occupied the country ,and for a few years they just lay low and had dispersed all over. The Northern Alliance and Nato had won a military victory.Even Pakistan withdrew its support from the Taliban, and was hopeful that the new Afghan Karzai govt would be favourable for Pak.
The Karzai govt did not take the route that Pak wanted them to take , so our military then again decided to invest in the Afg Taliban as they could be allies.
With Pakistani support, the Taliban insurgency gained momentum.
Musharraf's view that the Taliban grew in strength due to under-representation of Pashtuns in the Afg govt does not carry much weight, imo.

Pashto is the official language of the country . Despite that the biggest news channels in Afghanistan are all in dari . Tolo news is the biggest news channel there and 90 % of its content is in dari . Pashto is not the national language of Pakistan , Urdu is so you cannot compare that .

That makes sense sense since most of Afghanistan iks Farsi speaking. But "biggest news channel" doesn't mean "Pashtun underepresentation": There are many Pashto represented channels.

Pakistan on the other hand doesn't even have Pashto as an official language despite it being the second largest language group speaking in the country ....lol

Hey bro, what's happening LONG TIME NO C

There is nothing more refreshing on internet than seeing ur love for our Pakistan but like every previous comment u made this one also has a small mistake

See in Pakistan we either speak our ethnic language or our national language which is Urdu, urdu is understood all over Pakistan so it's a common language and helps ppl of different ethnicities communicate seamlessly.
Now in order to climb the ladder of professional success both in private or government sectors we do not NEED to learn other ethnic groups language which puts all of us and our cultures at equal level.

Where as in Afghanistan to rise above a certain level u have to take up other ethnic groups language and culture which automatically gives them a commanding position.

                  Peace

Pashtun underrepresentation is not just limited to media in Afghanistan . Army , Sports Teams , Parliament seats , Political voice and the overall neglect of pashtuns in Afghanistan post 9/11 is evident everywhere . How can a country's largest speaking race(Around 40 %) end up being the minority in their own country? Its Possible in Afghanistan though .

Pashto is spoken by 15 % of Pakistan . Why would it be made the national language? It doesn't even make sense . If Punjabi(Which is spoken by over 50 %) of the country took a backseat to Urdu then i see no reason why Pashto shouldn't . It was one of the more wiser Decisions taken by Jinnah to make Urdu as the official language as it serves as a unifying force for the country .

Urdu is the language of Muslims of North India and Muhajirs, who are a small minority in Pakistan. Afghanistan has it better as Pashto and Farsi are the native languages of most of the population.

Except there's no reason to have any unifying language, you can argue making it a lingua franca, but you can't impose it on other ethnics.

By your logic because Pashto is spoken by only 15% it can't be a national language, well Urdu is only the mother-tongue of 8% of Pakistan (Karachiwalas) so if anything Punjabi and Pashto, even Sindhi, have more legitimacy as unifying tongues than Urdu.

Urdu speaker isn't ethnicity. Any muhajir who came from anywhere in India naturally adopted urdu because it was state language along with English. Imposing punjabi on others will be unfair just because it's spoken by half.

That's why Afghanistan don't have much future and one of the reasons for civil war. One group will have unfair advantage over other.

Urdu itself is an ethnic language of India.

                              not buying it.
