  • Kunar elders demand end to Pakistani shelling

ASADABAD (Pajhwok): Hundreds of tribal elders at a gathering held on Thursday in eastern Kunar province urged Pakistan to stop firing rockets into the province.

Tribal elder Shah Mahmood Qazi, addressing the gathering in Asadabad, the provincial capital, asked the Afghan government to provide heavy weaponry to the border guards.

Another speaker, Maulvi Najibullah Haqyar, asked the Ministry of Border and Tribal Affairs to resolve problems being faced by tribes living on both sides of the Durand Line.

A member of the provincial council, Jamaluddin Sayyar, said Pakistan was violating Afghanistan’s sovereignty.

He said the Afghan forces, government and people were ready for every kind of sacrifice in the defence of the mother land.

Deputy tribal and border affairs minister Mohammad Yaqub Ahmadzai, who attended the gathering, said efforts were underway to prevent the Pakistani shelling.

He said Pakistan wanted to create hatred among tribes on both sides of the border through the shelling but it would not be able to do so.

“The people living on both sides of the Durand Line are brothers,” the deputy minister said.

He said Pakistan wanted to evict residents from areas near the border and establish security posts there. “But Afghanistan will defend its areas and in this the government has full support of the people.”
