      Hello.

According the the census of 1998 and with the adjustment of the population growth rate, there are 20 million people with Pakistani citizenships in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, close to 80% of whom are Pashtun. In addition to that, there are 3-4 million Pashtuns in Balochistan as well as 4-5 million in Karachi. I'm talking about Pashtuns here and not Pathans. There is also a sizable Pashtun population in the province of Punjab.
      • Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa: 16 million
      • Balochistan: 3.5 million
      • Karachi: 4.5 million
      • FATA: 3 million
      • Punjab: 1-2 million~

It all adds up to 28-29 million approximately. Some people claim that there are more even Pashtuns on the east of the Durrand because the census is based on people's mother tongue and not their ethnicity (a lot of Hazara-speakers for instance claim to be Pashtuns).

This is based on the 1998 census.

Having said all that, Pashtuns in Pakistan represent only a meager 15% of the total population whereas Pashtuns in Afghanistan represent around half or more of the total population. That's why sheer numbers don't matter because for the 28 million Pashtuns on the east of the Durrand, there are 71 million Punjabis, 25-7 million Sindhis and other ethnic groups. It's no wonder that Pashtuns have no or very little say in the affairs of the state they inhabit and are an oppressed minority.

The fertile lands of khyber pakhtunkhwa are densely populated compared to barren mountainous areas of afghanistan. The terrain of FATA is like afghanistan and population here is very small, around 4 millions.

Only pashto speakers are alone 30 million, non-pashto speaking pathans like niazis, tarins, jadoons, swatis etc are not included in census as pashtuns.

            Dear Jasmine,

There have never been proper census in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Before the Soviet war in Afghanistan the Pashtun population in Afghanistan was more than Pakistan, but after the war the numbers changed in favor of Pakistan.

This is political game played by the Americans and Pakistan to bring the Pashtun population of Afghanistan towards them and join Pakistan.

The reality and truth is that Pashtuns in Afghanistan number more than 15 million, but with the west in Afghanistan are trying to lower the Pashtuns in favour of the minority and are trying their best to show Pakistan with higher Pashtun population.

Today Pakistan's foreign agenda is very strong and they have very strong allies in US and Britian. These countries will never give up their support for Pakistan as Pakistan is a great tool for them to be used against India and China to keep their influence down in the region. When the Americans and Britain relies they no longer need Pakistan the country will not exist within weeks.

Today Americans are supporting Pakistan into their propoganda game majority of Pashtuns living in Pakistan and less number living in Afghanistan.

Why it is in benefit of Pakistan to show falsely higher numbers of pashtuns in census?

I agree on the point that pashtuns are actually a lot more than 40% if proper census is carried out there but it is not greater than population of pashtuns in pakistan.

For numerous reasons. I will give you just one main reason which is the most popular. That reason is Pakistan's rebuttal to the Durrand agreement. If a stable and peaceful Afghanistan ever claims Pakhtunkhwa they will argue that we have more Pashtuns in Pakistan so we might as well annex the region up until Kabul and form a Loy Pakistan instead.

In fact, There is a video on YouTube of a Pakistani official arguing that.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

As we have said before it is flawed logic, I mean if that is the case maybe they should reunite with India since there are more muslims there. lolzz

When British were ruling India their total population wasn't more than 40 thousands but in comparison the total indian population was 400 million, but this couldn't change the fact that the 40 billion indians were subservient to a very tiny numbers of British rulers and officers.

Before the division of Pakistan in 1971, East Bengal had 56 percent population where as that of Punjab was a mere 24 percent, but Punjabis have been keeping a strong grip on power since Pakistan creation by the British making all other nations inside Pakistan like their conquered subjects; so population doesn't count much in Pakistan.
