  • In 1925 King Amanullah replaced Rupee currency with Afghani....stupidty

The first Afghani was introduced in 1925, during the reign of King Amanullah Khan , replacing the Afghan rupee, perhaps in the light of newly achieved independence and sovereignty. I find it surprising as the Rupee currency itself is innovation of the great Afghan emperor Sher Shah Sur.......Rupee is heritage of Afghans/Pashtuns, it seems no one knew about this in the Amanullah Khan's Afghanistan. Currency Reforms of Sher Shah Suri | History of Pashtuns د پښتنو تاريخ

Now Rupee is "Paki" currency in the eyes of Afghans,......and ignorant Pakistanis are smirking that Afghans have for some reason inclination towards using Rupee and term 'paisa'

is ''paisa'' a Dari/Persian or Pashto term?

Farsizabans I know say ''[rupiya]'' not ''[rupee]''

Do you know the reason behind calling the currency an afghani?

That's like England naming their currency Englishman.

Yes i always thought it was stupid....

I remember when an American host said Afghani instead of Afghan and someone corrected it by saying "its like calling American people as dollar".....well we cant blame people for making that mistake.....I cringed so hard....whoever thought it was a brilliant idea to name the currency the same as the nationality term was a stupid moron...

Also perhaps the worst idea was to apply " Afghan" to citizen of Afghanistan, when most times people also use this term solely for Pakhtuns...we could have had something like British national name, and then sub ethnic names like English, Irish, Scottish, etc. but I guess we are over that issue by now....

though its confusing...same as whatever is going in the country....there is not much sense of logic applied....

"Afghani" is the name of our currency. We are Afghans.

I wonder how this thread is going to transform into a skin complexion one.

I am aware of that. It's just so prone to confusion. How many people will call afghans afghanis? The answer is a lot.

Once in Manchester, I entered into an Iranian grocery with my former girlfriend (a Pashtun Afghan btw). We were speaking Farsi so the Iranian owner of the place asked us "thats a nice accent, where are you from?". My girlfriend replied "Ma Afghani astem" (we are Afghanis). The Iranian guy laughed hard and said "khanum Afghani esm pul-e shoma ast. Shoma Afghan astid"(madame, Afghani is your currency. You are Afghans!)

Well, you re right. It might lead to confusion.. but who cares? We have more important and serious problems to deal with.

Right, we've solved the mystery on the vendetta and butt-hurt attitude you have of Pashtuns. It always boils down to a girl typical.

In paktia we still use the word "rapay." hardly anyone uses the word "afghani." Even in Kabul people from our area still use the word "rupay." The whole reform was a big failure.

Its not stupid, in Europe you have Euros as the currency name, and rupeey, means money, calling your money just money is stupid.

-_- Becuase rupay means money. They say just money, like in a lot of countries people say the general term money and do not name it by the currency official name. Payse or paisa is took over from farsi. But even in Khost they call in Afghani and its an accepted name.

When people ask how much something is. They answer with a numerical value followed by the word "rapay." Hardly anyone uses the word "Afghani." Youlive in a fantasy world. It does not even make sense.

Rupee or Rupiya doesnt mean money.......its just that this is the currency of this region for five centuries so that its taken in the meaning of money......180 grains silver coin was Rupiya of Sher Shah. Paisa is also used as a word for money , but its actually a name of currency, also innovation of Sher Shah Sur.
