Taliban fighters hold out against security forces in Kunduz

    Tuesday, October 04, 2016 - 01:07
Taliban fighters hold points in Kunduz after attacking the city almost one year ago in their largest success in 15 years of war. Julie Noce reports.

Taliban militants are holding out in parts of the northern Afghan city of Kunduz on Tuesday after attacking the city a day earlier. Monday's siege comes almost exactly one year to the day after the militants briefly captured the same city in what was considered their biggest success in the 15 year war. After the initial attack, Afghan security forces regained control over some parts of the city, but pockets of militants remain. We are carrying out our operation successfully, this security officer said. We can assure the people of Kunduz, we will demolish these cowards. Video posted to the Taliban's social media websites purport to show militants walking through empty streets. You can hear the person shooting the video describe how the Taliban had captured army strongpoints and taken prisoners, but the authenticity of the video could not be confirmed. Officials said U.S. special forces and aircraft were positioned near the city to provide support if needed.
