  • Should Muslim countries ban Shiism?

Shiism emerged as a political group during internal disagreements among companions of Prophet Muhammed sal Allahu Alayhi wasalam. Later on, Shiism became a religious sect and for the past 1400 years Shiites have slowly moved further away from mainstream Islam.

Shiites consist of many groups. The largest group is the twelvers sect. They believe that the companions of Prophet Muhammed were apostates and hypocrites and they believe that their 12 imams have divine attributes. The cursing of companions alone is deemed as apostasy by mainstream Islam. Attribution of divinity to people is considered as polytheism.

Based on the above, we can say that the twelvers aren't really Muslims and since their creed conflicts with Islam, it shouldn't be allowed to be spread in Muslim countries.

Shiite theology is not only devious, it is also a tool of Iranian foreign policy. Shiism is used to organize and coordinate destabilizing elements.

In order to limit the influence of Iran and to end religious deviance, Muslim countries should ban Shiism.

    Do you agree or disagree?

I disagree, this would only exacerabate tensions and sectarian violence.

The Standard opinion of Ahl Al-Sunnah wal Jam'ah is that Shi'i are Muslims. The way to offset problems is to marginalize extremist voices.

Most Shi'i show respect to other Muslims and are honorable people. Most of the smear campaign against Shi'i is similar to smear campaigns done by Islamophobes against Islam in general.

Many very important and positive works on philosophy and theology have been penned by Shi'i Scholars.

One of the best books on Islamic Social theory was written by a Shi'i, Dr. 'Ali Shariati.

If your concern is Shi'i doing "Taqiyyah" , then repressing them would only exacerbate this issue.

Intellectually we should be sophisticated enough to divorce Iranian Establishment's exploitation of Shi'i Theology for their political agenda from Mainstream Shi'i.

Banning Shi'i would alienate moderate Shi'i voices who want to cooperate and work with Sunnis for unity.

"Banning" is just a desperate, and very ineffective strategy born from intellectual laziness.

Also, as economist Kaushik Basu says: "For a nation to progress it is important for people to spend time on science, mathematics and literature instead of spending time showing that 5,000 years ago their ancestors did science, mathematics and literature."

Mainstream Islam considers fundamental tenets of 12ver Shiism as apostasy. If the largest and most significant sect of Shiism today is against Islam, then we should reconsider our position regarding Shiism.

The Shiites who were considered as Muslims were the ones who did not practice shirk and did not consider the Sahaba as apostates and hypocrites. Those sects are practically extinct.

Shias are not real Muslims.. but they are considered as part of the Ummah. In Herat we have a huge Shia community. Most of the people consider them Muslims (confused Muslims but Muslims after all). Same thing happens all over Afghanistan.

I disagree. We should not ban Shias.

Shiites are intolerant against Sunnis. They consider Sunnis as kaafirs because Sunnis don't believe in their 12 imams. That's why Sunnis are persecuted in countries where Shiites are dominant.

Yet, Sunnis always choose to tolerant them. They are allowed to preach, spread their theology and propagate it even in Makkah & Madina.

              It's time Sunnis stop this.

The Two main 'aqa'id in Mainstream Sunni Islam are 'Ashari and Maturidi. Neither of these stipulate that Shi'i practice shirk nor is cursing Sahaba apostasy. Cursing Sahaba is a sin and morally wrong, and there will be a punishment for it in the afterlife, but not apostasy.

There are Wahhabis who call Sunnis kufar. We should marginalize extremist voices who takfir blindly, whether Shi'a or Otherwise.

However Tolerance towards Shi'a on the whole is the Noble Path, we should build bonds with them and not create animosity.

Only exception is if they use aggression and even then we only target the specific aggressors not the community.

We have a right to defend ourselves against ghul'ah, but no right to persecute people just because they're Shi'a.

Two wrongs does not make a right. There are plenty of Sunni cursing and killing Shias. You are being kinda biased here, brother.

BTW 20-25% Afghans are Shia, how are you going to ban their faith? What do you expect them to do?

Should America and France ban Islam and Muslims??

Banning shiism or any other sect is not practical.People should be free to follow any path which they think leads to salvation.
