In the last few days, we have seen euphoria in Afghanistan because a few Afghan soldiers and a few Pakistani soldiers failed to cope with the hunger and thirst of Ramadan and decided to shoot at each other.
Their lack of imaan is played out in the media as an international incident where the Afghan side frames it as a matter of national honor by defending the so-called border between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The Pakistanis frame it as an agression against Pakistan by Afghanistan istigated by India.
I am one of many Afghans and Pakistanis who are indifferent to this current situation for the following reasons:
- Pakistan as a state is founded on stolen land. Afghan land was sold to the British empire by Amir Abdurrahman Khan, and then later his backstabbing family maintained the status quo even when the empire collapsed. Pakistan inherited the border and the Afghan government never made an effort to reclaim the land.
- However, Afghan politicians have always used the issue to play on people's emotions and mobilize them for their cause without really wanting to take back the teritorry.
- Pakistan played the role of a rodent in the last 4 decades. Afghan subsequent governments treated the border as a neglected kitchen where rodents frequent to steal food. Pakistan encroached unto Afghan territory crossing the Durand line on many occasions. Likewise, the Iranian government encroached into Afghan territory in Western provinces in many places. Afghan government never made an effort to stop the encroachment.
- The current Afghan government has a strategic security agreement with the USA and currently there are many member states of NATO present in Afghanistan for security reasons. These foreig forces and the security agreement are meant to protect Afghanistan. Yet, none of this can defend Afghanistan against Pakistan.
- Any real armed conflict between Afghanistan and Pakistan is pointless because Afghanistan doesn't have a modern military. Pakistan has many types of bombers, artillery and even nukes. Plus, America has given them all the weapons previously used in Afghanistan.
- The current government is using the Durand issue just like previous governments have used it to keep people busy. Afghanistan is one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Its current government is unconstitutional because there are two presidents and election results are ignored. Its parliament was supposed to be dissolved but since nobody wants another election, people are still sitting there cashing the checks. Obviously the corrupt government and media don't want people to talk about this and that's why attention is diverted to a silly gunbattle in Torkham.
Conclusion: the torkham battle is a 'drama' and anyone who falls for this drama is either stupid or extremely ignorant.
