  • Punjabi girl was set on fire by her family in lahore for marrying a Pashtun man

A Pakistani mother on Wednesday burnt her 16-year-old daughter alive for marrying a man of her own choice, before shouting on the street to neighbours that she had killed the teen for bringing shame on her family.

It was the third so-called "honour killing" in the South Asian country in as many months, and a rare example of the crime being carried out by a woman.

Zeenat Bibi, 16, was set on fire by her mother Perveen Bibi in the eastern city of Lahore a little more than a week after the couple had acquired their marriage licence, police said.

"Perveen Bibi killed her daughter Zeenat Bibi by burning her alive around 9:00 am on Wednesday," Haidar Ashraf, a senior police official told AFP, adding the teen had married a man named Hasan Khan on May 29.

Khan's ethnicity -- he is an ethnic Pashtun, while Zeenat was a Punjabi -- was the main cause of the family's disapproval, according to the woman's family.

Zeenat's husband Khan told local TV station Geo News that the pair had eloped, but he had reluctantly allowed her to return to her family home after they promised they would hold a celebration and not harm her.

He said: "After living with me for four days following our marriage, her family contacted us and promised they would throw us a proper wedding party after eight days. Then we would be able live together.

"Zeenat was unwilling to go back to her home and told me that she would be killed by her family, but later agreed when one of her uncles guaranteed her safety.

"After two days, she called me and said that her family had gone back on their word and asked me to come to get her, but I told her to wait for the promised eight days. Then, she was killed."

Ashraf, the police official, said Perveen and other family members had confessed to the crime and that police had seized kerosene oil from the scene.

    - Family defiant -

At the victim's two-bedroom family home in a low-income southern neighbourhood of the city, Perveen's family remained defiant.

Naseem Bibi, Perveen's younger sister, told AFP: "After killing her daughter, Perveen went out on the street, took off her shawl and started beating herself on her chest, shouting: 'People! I have killed my daughter for misbehaving and giving our family a bad name.'"

"My sister declared a long time ago she would not allow her daughter to marry a Pashtun," she said.

The victim's sister Shazia also blamed Zeenat for defying her mother, but said she had urged her mother to cut ties with her instead of killing her.

Perveen's husband died several years ago and her relationship with her daughters had deteriorated, according to Shazia.

"Our mother became distressed because of her daughter's disobedience and because she felt there was no man in the house to rein her in."

Hundreds of women are murdered by their relatives in Pakistan each year on the pretext of defending what is seen as family honour.

"A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness" -- a film telling the story of a rare survivor of an attempted honour killing -- won an Oscar for best documentary short in February.

Amid publicity for the film, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif vowed to eradicate the "evil" of honour killings but no fresh legislation has been tabled since then.

The ethnic bound in Pakistan is extremely superficial, there is nothing that can bound the 4 cats(provinces) tight in tails...even holy Islam is not unique to Pakistan as Judaism is to Israel that can base her identity. The only that keep Pakistan is the military once it falls the country will fall like a house of cart.

she was set on fire for eloping with a motorcycle mechanic rather than having a "traditional" marriage. it had nothing to do with his or her ethnicity.

I know why this have been given ethnic angle but in 99.99% of cases in Pakistan ethnicity have little to do with honour killing and more to do with girl marrying without permission of her family and other backward reasons.

Could it be for what the murderer --girl’s mother stated? Come on now golden..pay attention to article.

Although recently DNA study proves racially linkage between Afghans mainly Pashtuns, Tajiks and Balochs and that of north Indians; in addition with Punjabis we have Islam as common bound but the environment of Punjab—land of 5 rivers with plenty of resources and that of harsh mountains of Afghan land where Pashtuns lives have given us a lot of cultural dissimilarities. Especially when it comes to marriage, the influence of Hindu caste system on Punjabis and Hindustani Muslims…dowry demand from brides family and etc…makes marriage outside race/social status a punishable crime.
Worst part is how the Trump and other anti-Muslims in west are using this as a tool to vilify Islam.
All in all, this proves Muslims tribal mentality, even when actual Islam extremely condemns this.

okay, you are right and i was wrong. what would happen to a pashtun girl if she were to marry a panjabi guy?? would only she be burned alive or the punjabi man as well??
why should this be treated as a shocking and unspeakable matter?? when pashtuns do it, it's a matter of nang, ghairat and pashtunwali but when a punjabi does it, it's cold blooded murder if not racial discrimination.

The ****, first of all are you retarded or what? Honour killing isn't exclusive to any ethnicity in Pakistan. Last month afghani in Karachi killed her sister just because she was talking with someone on phone. I saw this on tv so remember it, one can find many such examples.

Afghanis will kill their daughters for marrying someone without their permission but will not have problem selling same daughters to any ehra ghera, this must be islamic tradition as well.

Poonjabis hate Pashtuns, there is no surprise in that. Yet my fellow brothers on the other side of the fake Durand Line support Poonjabis. It is understandable and comprehendable if the daughter was punished for marrying without parent's approval, but burning her for marrying a Pashtun makes no sense.

In Afghan/Pashtun case when it happens usually it is the male family member...I'm just surprise what kind of mother will do this to her own daughter---maybe she didn't and is taking the blame for her sons? God knows, either way no matter who commits these horrific act it is so inhuman and plan evil. Girl or boy should have the right to decide who they want to marry...this evil practice is all culture and has nothing to do with Islam.

lol even most pious muslims in Afghanistan (Taliban) were famous for gang raping women when they came to power. You're in no position to insult us afghani bacha

Honestly afghanis are most backward people on earth which is why your claims make no sense. All the things you mentioned are crimes common in every part of the world but no one else but only afghanis sell their own daughters and claim it as part of culture lmao
